Mrs. Melcher was a dressmaker, having specialized in wedding dresses. She was born March 5, 1887, northwest of St. Benedict, the daughter of Bernard and Caroline Lange Bergman. She spent her early life at St. Benedict and attended St. Benedict schools. She lived in Seneca since 1958. Mrs. Melcher was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church at Seneca and was a former member of the Seneca Garden Club and the Neighborhood Club at St. Benedict. She was married to Frank Melcher Oct 14, 1908, at St. Benedict. They farmed southeast of St. Benedict until he died June 28, 1954. Four daughters died in infancy and a son, Varnes Melcher, died March 11, 1976. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Melita Haverkamp, Mrs. Lucille Wichman and Mrs. Evelyn Waters, all of Seneca, and Mrs. LaVon Strathman, Rockton, Ill., two sons, Francis Melcher and Elmer Melcher, both of Seneca; 25 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at St. Benedict. Rosaries will be recited at 2 and 8 p.m. today at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church at St. Benedict or to Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church at Seneca.
