Miss Mary Hewitt, 76, died Monday afternoon (January 2, 1933) at Mercy hospital in Burlington, where she had been a patient since the last week in November. The funeral services were held at the Union church Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Reverend W. J. Giffin. A quartet, W. O. Yohe, Mrs. C. A. Brown and, Mr. and Mrs. Mecklenburg, sang. The pallbearers were W. G. Wilson, W. C. Swan, M. S. Hutcheson, J. E. Boltz, J. C. Green and C. A. Peterson. The interment was at Elmwood cemetery. Miss Mary Hewitt, daughter of Wm. J. and Amy Ann Hewitt, was born near Morning Sun, Iowa, June 17, 1856, and was 76 years, 6 months and 15 days of age at the time of her death. She received her education in the Honey Creek school and in the academy at Denmark, Iowa. Her entire life was spent in this community. The life was not conspicuous but notable in its ministry of love and in its witness to Christian character. Miss Hewitt was a Christian from childhood, and a member of the local Presbyterian church all her life. At the age of 17 years she began teaching in the children's department of the Sabbath school and continued that service the most part of her life and so long as health would permit. She was a great sufferer during her last illness, but through it all displayed a Christian faith and patience that were remarkable. Her parents, one sister and two brothers have preceded her in death. The following immediate members of the family survive: Five brothers, Cyrus, W. T. and J. T. Hewitt of Morning Sun; Alva H. and Charles E. Hewitt of Spokane and Yakima, Washington, respectively, and one sister, Mrs. Nina D. Armstrong, of Hampton, Iowa. A great host of neighbors and friends join with these in mourning the passing of a noble and faithful Christian saint. "All hearts grow warmer in the presence Of one who, seeking not her own, Gave freely for the love of giving, Nor reaped for self the harvest sown."
