Mrs. Wagner was a woman that was held in the highest esteem by everyone. The funeral will be held from the St. Ludger Catholic church on Friday morning at 9 o'clock in charge of Rev. Father Windolph and the remains will be laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery. Sympathy is extended to the bereaved relatives in their hour of great sorrow. ...The Creighton News 19 April 1923 ******** Death of Mrs. Mathias Wagner Within a weeks time following the forty sixth wedding anniversary Mrs. Mathias Wagner died at the family home northwest of Creighton Tuesday April 17th and was buried in St. Ludger's Cemetery Friday, April 19th. Although her physical condition had not permitted her going about for a few years she was feeling as well as usual until briefly before her death when she was suddenly stricken with the fatal illness. Mary Sand was born in St. Louis, Missouri, August 28, 1854. With her parents she moved to Omaha when she was nine years of age. When she attained her sixteenth year of age both of her parents were dead, after which it became necessary to rely upon her own resources. On April 10th, 1877 she was united in marriage to Mathias Wagner in Omaha. She accompanied her husband to the homestead near Creighton where she resided continuously until her death. Pass with us briefly on a journey of 46 years with Mr. and Mrs. Mathias Wagner. Homestead life begins in a practical wilderness in 1877. Homestead home, a sod house. Oxen are used for farm power. Virgin sod is turned into productive soil. Storms, predatory animals -- even Indians, were obsessions. Long distances for provisions were necessary. Prairie fires, droughts, and insect pests destroyed production of crops, sickness prevailed in frequent instances. Twelve children were born, eleven of whom were reared to maturity. Through all of such life Mr. and Mrs. Mathias Wagner survived for forty six years. Word pictures of volumes could not express more fully a true tribute of sturdiness and endurance than is conveyed by the telling of the simple facts here related. Mrs. Mathias Wagner was a devoted mother. Her maternal instinct guiding her securely in rearing a large family, all of whom matured with a respectability fostered and taught by motherly love. She labored unceasingly and coordinately with her husband and by such co-operation and much frugality was able to acquire temporal things in an abundance, yet in every instance finding ample opportunity to provide for her spiritual welfare and that of her family, and rounding out a long lifetime of good for herself as well as for others. Mr. Mathias Wagner survives and while grief from separation of a life partner must be great yet to him should be the pleasure of rest and complete contentment in his reclining years. Mrs. Mathias Wagner was preceded in death by two daughters, one of whom died in infancy, the other but a few years ago. She is survived by her husband, four daughters; Mrs. H. M. Mecke, Mrs. Jos. Neyens, Creighton. Mrs. Jos. Sukup, Verdigre. Mrs. Geo. Sukup, Winnetoon. Six sons: John, George, Edward, Richard, Joseph and Leo. A sister, Mrs. George Hartman, Cleveland, Minn. A cousin, Mrs. Kate Goettke, St. Louis, Mo. Funeral for deceased was held from the Catholic church Friday morning at nine o'clock. Requiem high mass was celebrated by Father Windolph, and a glowing tribute was paid by the pastor to the memory of the deceased. Attendance by a great number of friends at the funeral indicated the esteem in which she was held. The six sons were active pall bearers. To Mr. Mathias Wagner and family who mourn the death of wife and mother with whom the journey of life for so long a time is now quickly ended a community crowded with friends extend condolences.
