Mathias Wagner, who resided two and one-half miles northwest of Creighton died at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha Saturday, Sept. 29th, of afflictions due to his advanced age of 86 years. Mr. Wagner was born at Messerick [Messerich], Germany, April 23rd, 1837. He came to the United States May 9, 1868 in company with his brother John, and went to Mendota, Illinois, engaging in farm work. He later went to Chicago and again later to Omaha and in the spring of 1869 to Fort McPherson. With his brother he came to Creighton in 1871 being conveyed by an ox team and wagon loaded with plows and provisions, they started on their journey, a distance of 180 miles, requiring nearly two weeks time for the trip. He acquired the homestead, where he remained during his remaining span of life except for such brief periods as was required during the earlier portion of homestead life to seek employment and compensation to continue to maintain the homestead. He was united in marriage to Mary Sand, April 11, 1876, and to them was born 12 children, ten of whom survive. His wife and daughter preceded him in death, one son dying in infancy, the spouse by but a few months. Surviving children are: Joe, John, George, Richard, Edward, and Leo. Mrs. Henry M. Mecke, Mrs. Joe Neyens, Mrs. Joe Sukup, and Mrs. George Sukup all of Creighton. A brother John Wagner who resides in Creighton and another brother residing in Germany, to which place the deceased went for an extended visit in 1911. Mr. Wagner also leaves to mourn twenty-one grand children. Funeral services were held from the Catholic church in Creighton Tuesday morning at ten o'clock. Solemn Requim Mass was sung by Father Windolph, assisted by Father Brady of Plainview and Father Mester of Pierce. Father Windolph delivered a most fitting eulogy over the dead body of a life long friend and parishioner. Interment was made in St. Ludger's Cemetery and the big concourse of friends who attended the services and surrounded the grave of a beloved neighbor gave fitting tribute, to the respect in which he was held in the community. Active pall bearers were the six sons of the deceased and the honorary pall bearers: Stephen Mattern, Albert Tinschert, Wm. Wilmes, John Huigens, Henry Schwartz, and Wm. Thomassen. The death and burial of Mathias Wagner who came here fifty years ago when our city and country side was merely prairie gives fitting occasion to pause momentarily and reflect if but briefly upon the good this sturdy and respected man has done for the community. Conveyed here with an ox team he began his half century of lifetime here by a determination to succeed and this he amply accomplished as is evidenced by his possessions at the time of death. The homestead being considered perfect in appointment and fully as complete as any in northeastern Nebraska. The earlier years of his pioneer life were beset with scourges and disappointments, grasshoppers and drought destroying in completeness the results of all labor in 1874 and 1875. The vicissitudes of a life time were endured through the years following and yet an era of prosperity followed and in the shadowy years of his life the deceased was surrounded by a plentifulness at every turn. The monument reared by himself is not measured alone by his many land holdings and chattels but by living progeny, six sons and four daughters, each and all of whom are respectful and respected in every instance. Lives there a man who does not recognize such a monument as one of perpetuity. Let thoughts revolt momentarily to results of his achievements. Neighbors attracted by his tenacity of purpose remained in a drought stricken settlement, others came later and the community gradually built to the proportions it is now and the nucleus of the community was formed by just such sturdy plowers as he who now rests in death. To Mathias Wagner even though dead, a tribute is owed. He lived an honorable and in all a noble life, and standing in the shadow of his demise let us reflect upon the good he has done for mankind and the perpetual good that may continue through his off spring.
