Carnine celebrated their golden wedding anniversary yesterday at their home, 1102 Congress Street. Their eight children and twelve grandchildren were with them for this happy occasion, and a big family dinner, followed by an informal reception to their scores of friends in Emporia, made its celebration becoming. The Carnines have spent nearly half of their married life--twenty-two years, to be exact, in Emporia--and this fact makes the celebration of the fiftieth wedding anniversary something of a town event. The beautiful gifts of gold showered upon the happy couple yesterday, and the long line of friends received into the home during the reception hours gave proof that the responsibility was appreciated. The home was appropriately decorated for the event, with streamers of gold from ceiling corners to chandelier in each room, while the rich hue of jonquils and Chinese lilies carried out the suggestion of gold in floral life. While the guests came during the afternoon, punch and wafers were served to them. The dinner, however, was the most important feature of the day. Mr. and Mrs. Carnine were surrounded at the table by the families of their children and a few close friends. The dinner was a most substantial one, but it was the ceremony at the close that carried the most genuine enjoyment. While the guests drank punch and ate cake, and congratulated the bride and groom of fifty years' journey, a presentation service was held. Rev. William Carnine, in a short speech, presented the father with a handsomely engraved gold-headed cane, and Rev. John Carnine gave the mother a beautiful gold watch and chain. Then, Rev. E. W. Beeson read an original composition in verse, which touched the deeper emotions of the day, and which was received with great appreciation. The informal reception to the celebrating couple began at the close of the dinner. Peter M. Carnine and Mary S. Luyster were married Thursday (bottom of article missing) Kansas, in the vicinity of Geneva, the town, however, being in Allen county. At the time of their marriage, Mr. Carnine was a member of the Ninth Kansa Cavalry, enlisted for service in the Civil War. When asked why the marriage had taken place during war time, with impending separation as a fact to be viewed daily, Mr. Carnine declared: "Well, you see, our engagement had been announced, and we decided to have the wedding, anyway." Mr. Carnine was quartered at Iola during this winter, but came across country for the wedding service, which was performed by Rev. E. K. Lynn, an old Presbyterian minister. Two or three days after the wedding, Mr. Carnine bade his bride farewell, and rode away to the service of his country. He was in actual service until the close of the war three years later, though he was home on furlough several times, and once on sick leave, when he endured a six weeks' siege of diphtheria. When the war ended, Mr. and Mrs. Carnine spent the summer on a farm near Neosho Falls. In the fall, they removed to the farm near Carlyle, in Allen County, which has since remained in their possession. Here they stayed, undergoing the hardships of the Kansas pioneers, until 1874, the year of the great Grasshopper Plague. Conditions grew so unfavorable at this time that Mr. Carnine took his family to Franklin County, Indiana, where they lived for the next six years. At the end of that time, they returned to their Kansas farm, where they stayed until 1890, at which time they came to Emporia. Here they have since lived, and Mr. Carnine has carried on his trade as carpenter. The Carnines are the parents of nine children, eight of whom are living. In the order of their birth they are: Edward Lincoln, who died in infancy; Mrs. Ida Beeson, of Emporia; Rev. William Carnine, of McCune; Mrs. Hattie Gordon, of Chicago Mound; Mrs. Della Buckingham, of Yuba City, Calif.; Rev. John Carnine, of Antoineta, Colo.; Harry Carnine, of Emporia; Charles Carnine, of Emporia; and George Carnine, of Coffeyville. Two of the sons are ministers, as indicated, while the eldest daughter is a wife of a minister. The three younger sons are respected employees in a bank, wholesale house and post office, respectively. Mr. Carnine will be 77 years old the fourth day of March. He is in excellent health, except for a number of injuries he received in the Katy wreck, at Moody, two years ago. He constantly feels the effects of these hurts. Mrs. Carnine is 68. The couple have been life-long members of the Presbyterian Church, and the splendid Christian atmosphere inoculated in their home has found its ultimate expression in the God-fearing family which has been reared. Mrs. Carnine, in a soft, creamy dress, with a clasp of rubies at the throat, showed little of the effects of half a century as a pioneer's wife, yesterday. The gown, she gave to understand, was not her wedding gown, but one secured expressly for this occasion. MARY S. CARNINE DEAD Mrs. Mary Susan Carnine, 90, died at 5:30 o'clock this morning at the home of her son, Harry Carnine, 3-1/2 miles northeast of Emporia. She had been sick for 10 days. Mrs. Carnine was born in Franklin, Ind., January 15, 1844. Her maiden name was Mary Susan Luyster. She came to Kansas in 1857, and lived first in Geneva, coming to Emporia in 1890. She was married in Geneva to Peter M. Carnine in February, 1862. Mr. Carnine died in 1918. Mrs. Carnine is survived by five sons, Rev. W. W. Carnine, Lebo; Rev. John N. Carnine, Laramie, Wyo.; Harry and Charles Carnine, Emporia, and George Carnine, Stockton, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Hattie Gordon, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Mrs. Della Buckingham, Yuba City, Calif., and two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Kells, Chico, Calif., and Mrs. Jennie Bradley, Geneva, Kan. Mrs. Carnine had been a member of the Presbyterian church since childhood. Funeral arrangements have not been made. *********************************** The Emporia Gazette, 14 Jul 1949, Thursday EMPORIANS ATTEND ANNIVERSARY FETE AT CARLYLE CHURCH The 90th anniversary of the founding of the Presbyterian church of Carlyle, 12 miles north of Iola, celebrated Sunday, June 26, was of particular interest to several Emporia citizens. This little church, built by pioneers in 1859, never has missed a Sunday service. The first wedding in the church was that of Peter Carnine and Mary Susan Luyster, during the Civil war, the groom being in the service in Company H, Ninth Kansas Cavalry. Peter Carnine, who lately had come from Franklin county, Ind., with two or three other young men, felt the need of a church, and they were among the little group of founders. The Carnines came to Emporia in the eighties, and thereafter their membership was in the First Church of Emporia. Their son-in-law, the late Rev. E. W. Beeson, father of Irwin Beeson, of Emporia, was one of the pastors of the Carlyle church, and later Mr. Beeson lived in Emporia. Attending the celebration from Emporia and vicinity were Harry Carnine, a son, Mrs. Carnine and daughter, Margaret; Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Beeson, Mrs. R. A. Smith and Max Smith, Emporia; Mr. and Mrs. Claibourne Smith, of Hartford, Mrs. Smith a daughter of the William Carnines; the Rev. and Mrs. William Carnine, a son of the Peter Carnines. The celebration included a forenoon and afternoon service, conducted by the pastor, at which William Carnine, Harry Carnine and Irwin Beeson spoke. A fried chicken dinner, with all the trimmings, was served at the noon interlude, in the domestic science rooms of the Carlyle High school, which was followed by a couple of hours of intense visiting. The first building of the Carlyle church, which was the first Presbyterian church in Kansas south of Topeka, was of stone, laid up without mortar, and it didn't stand up many years, but served its purpose. Three buildings have been erected since, the most recent in 1926, a substantial and roomy structure. The site, on a part of the Peter Carnine homestead, was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Carnine to the Congregation. Mrs. Carnine grew up in the same Indiana neighborhood as did Mr. Carnine, and came with her parents to Allen county a few years later, where their acquaintance was renewed.--Laura M. French
