Read More	The following provided by Find A Grave contributor "Cara": The River Press, Fort Benton, Mont. 23 Jan 1957 Old Time Resident Died at Hospital Miss Mary Varilla Chapin, a resident of Chouteau county and Fort Benton for 48 years, passed away at the St. Clare hospital in this city on Saturday, Jan. 19th. She had been a patient there for only a short time, but had not been in the best of health for several months. Miss Chapin was born in Iowa, on Dec. 23, 1880, and was 76 years of age. She spent her early life in Iowa and in 1909 she came to Montana and this county and took up a homestead in the Elim section with her mother. For a good many years she taught rural schools in this county and was a candidate for superintendent of schools in this county in 1936, 1942 and 1946. She continued to teach in the county schools until her retirement a few years ago. She has maintained her home in this city since 1933. She was well known and highly respected by all who knew her and her passing will be mourned by a large circle of friends. She was a graduate of the Western Washington College of Education. Miss Chapin is survived by one brother, Clarence L. Chapin of Annandale, Virginia; three nephews who live at Kalispell. Two brothers preceded her in death, Leonard Chapin and Roy Chapin, both were homesteaders in the section east of town. The surviving brother, Clarence L., also homesteaded in the Square Butte section and resided here for five years and then left for the east to make his home. Funeral services were held at the Benton Funeral Home Chapel on Monday afternoon and were conducted by the Rev. W. Lloyd Hanley, pastor of the Christian church. Burial was in the family plot in Riverside cemetery.
