Mary and John Taylor were married on 3 July 1850 at the Congregational Church in Kirkwall, Orkney Islands, Scotland and within a few days following departed from Glasgow to the US, arriving in New York on 23 Aug 1850. They initially made their home in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania where John worked as a Blacksmith for a coal mining company.
