He started farming with his father and entered the United States Marine Corps in 1952, stationed in California as a court reporter. Maryan Wacha was born September 28, 1932, daughter of Thomas and Ruth (Semotan) Wacha in Toledo, Tama County, Iowa. She spent most of her adolescence on a farm east of Toledo, Otter Creek Township; was educated in rural schools and graduated from Toledo High School, Toledo in 1951. She was employed in Toledo before her marriage. On June 6,1953, Leonard and Maryan were married in Barstow, California, at the Marine Corps Chapel. Father Fitzgerald, the chaplain, officiated at the nuptial Mass. Mr. and Mrs. Robert R. Dostal stood up for the couple. They lived in Barstow until Leonard finished his service. Upon Leonard release from service, they returned to start farming with his parents. They have farmed in the Clutier and Traer area for these past 32 years. They are the parents of six children, one of whom is deceased; On February 22, 1959, Jo Ann Maria was born. She attended North Tama, Traer Schools, graduating in 1977. She continued her education in Marshalltown School of Nursing, graduating with honors, as a registered nurse. In 1983, she married Charles J. Murphy, Cedar Falls. Chuck is employed at United Concrete and is also a farmer near Dike. Jo Ann is employed at St. Francis Hospital, Waterloo. They are the parents of two boys, Michael Jay, 21/2 yrs. and Jason Charles, 9 months. They reside in Dike. On July 29, 1960, Loren Paul was born, received his education through the North Tama Schools, graduating in 1978. He attended North East Technical School, Calmar, taking up Construction Technology. He now owns his own business as Dostal Construction, in Tama, Iowa. He constructed his home at 1406 Siegel St. in Tama, where he now lives. On February 23, 1962, Thomas William was born. He attended Clutier Elementary. On September 17, 1971, Tommy suffocated in a tragic accident on the farm. His burial services were at St. Wenceslaus, Carroll Township; Father Ruzicka was celebrant. He is interred in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery. On December 8, 1965, Jeffrey Charles was born. He attended North Tama Schools, graduating in 1983. He also attended North East Technical School, Calmar, specializing in Construction Technology, presently is working for his brother, Loren, in Tama. On May 1, 1967, Barbara Jean was born. After her graduation from North Tama, Traer, she is furthering her education at Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids, taking courses for legal secretary and has plans to become a paralegal. On September 28, 1972, Martin Lee was born. He is attending North Tama Community School, Traer. The Dostal children were delivered at St. Thomas Hospital in Marshalltown with the exception of Martin Lee, who was born at Marshalltown Area Community Hospital, St. Thomas no longer being open. We have had one family doctor all these years, Dr. A.J. Havlik, Tama, who passed away in 1986. All the children have been active in 4-H. They enjoy snow-skiing in the winter and water skiing on Holiday Lake, Brooklyn, Iowa, in the summer. They all enjoy snowmobiling. In 1968, Leonard and Maryan purchased a farm five and one half miles south of Traer, where they now live, grain farming and feeding cattle. Leonard also is a full time insurance adjuster for Bohemian Mutual Ins., Tama, his area covering several counties. They are members of the St. Wenceslaus Church, K.D. Lodge, of which Leonard has served as president. Leonard is on the church board, Maryan on the church board of education. Leonard and Maryan have been active in the National Farmers Organization. They also act as Co-ordinators for the National Catholic Rural Life. by Leonard Dostal Maryan Dostal, 82, of Traer, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Sunrise Hill Care Center. She was born Sept. 28, 1932, in Toledo, daughter of Thomas J. and Ruth M. Semotan Wacha. She married Leonard W. Dostal on June 6, 1953, in Barstow, Calif., at the chapel of the U.S. Marine Base. She attended Toledo schools, graduating in 1950. Maryan was a homemaker and farm wife and also worked at Traer Manufacturing until her retirement. Maryan was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church. Survived by her husband; her children, JoAnn (Chuck) Murphy of Dike, Loren (Sarah) Dostal of Toledo, Jeff (Julie) Dostal of Traer, Barb (Kendall) Jordan of Toledo and Martin (Anita) Dostal of Traer; grandchildren Michael (Kristen), Jason and Lindsay Murphy, Trace and Zach Stegman, Jacob Dostal, Alexa and Jackson Dostal, Nicholas and Megan Jordan, and Joshua, Bryce and Hunter Dostal; and a great-granddaughter, Claire Murphy. Preceded in death by a son, Thomas, at age 9; a grandson in infancy, Gabriel Dostal; her parents; two brothers, Carleton and Wayne Wacha; and two sisters, Glendola Wacha and Joy Wilkinson. Services at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, St. Paul Catholic Church, Traer, with burial in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery, rural Clutier. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Funeral Home, with a 6 p.m. rosary service. Memorials may be directed to the family for a donation at a later date. Family was the most important thing to Maryan, never missing any of her grandchildren’s events. The Dostal family would like to say thank you for all of the love and support to family, friends and especially the staff at Sunrise Hill.
