Sgt. Mason Wilbur Gray, III, was admitted to the hospital Thursday, having been taken ill the preceding day. His illness progressed rapidly and his death was attributed by physicians to bulbar polio-encephalitis, fulminating malignant — considered the most deadly type of the virus infection. The officer, whose home was in Poolesville, is survived by his wife, Mrs. Florence White Gray; three children, Mason, IV, Jane and Elizabeth, all at home; and his parents. Mason W. Gray, II, and Mrs. Beryl Gray, of Poolesville. He was born in Laredo, Tex. Sgt. Gray is the second worker employed in the Montgomery County Court House, Rockville, to become ill of polio in that county's current outbreak. The other patient, whose illness has been mild, is reported recovering. The police officer had been a member of the Montgomery County force since July 21, 1941. He was highly rated as an efficient officer, said Chief Charles Orme, and his death is a great loss to the entire department. He was assigned to Montgomery Police headquarters as a radio specialist, and was widely known through the county for his excellent record and pleasant relations with the public in general. Sgt. Gray had been brought to Frederick Thursday for diagnosis and treatment. Late Friday night, laboratory tests confirmed the diagnosis of polio and arrangements were under way to move him to Washington in the State Police ambulance but his death occurred as preparations for the removal were being made. During World War II, Sgt. Gray served as radio technician aboard the Coast Guard flagship Duane. He attended West Point Prep School, American University, and the University of Maryland. He was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Poolesville. The body will remain at the funeral home in Barnesville until today at 10 a.m. when it will be removed to St. Peter's church for 11 o'clock services. Interment will be in the Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville. William B. Hilton, funeral director.
