Description	:	Mathias "Matthias" Burkhardt, Jr., was born on August 6, 1838, at Unterhausen, Landsberg am Lech, in the Kingdom of Bavaria, within the German Confederation (1814-1871), whose independent principalities in 1871 became semi-autonomous states within the Second German Empire (1871-1918) created in 1871 at Versailles, France, when their crowned rulers acknowledged the Prussian King Wilhelm I to be the "Emperor of Germany". The fact that the Burkhardt surname -- in its several variations in spelling -- is widely recognized internationally is a fact discussed in the Memorial to Matthias Burkhardt, Sr. (1810-1892). * * * * * Katherine "Kate" (Lotz) Burkhardt -- the wife of Mathias Burkhardt, Jr. -- was born at the small industrial town of Aßlar, Kreis Wetzlar, in the Kingdom of Prussia within the German Confederation on August 26, 1843, the seventh-born of the six daughters and three sons of Wilhelm Lotz (1807-1878) and Magdalena ("Maggie") (Lotz) Lotz (1806-1890). The whole family of eleven members, along with one son-in-law, and two grandchildren, traveled in two groups aboard two steamships from the port of Hamburg to the port of New York during the middle 1850s and settled in Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio. There, on October 28, 1863, Katherine ("Kate") Lotz wed Mathias (Matthias) Burkhardt, Jr., an immigrant from the Free City of Bremen in the German Confederation. Together they raised four daughters and six sons in Butler County, Ohio, Bruce Garver, who created this Memorial, is one of the many great-grandchildren of Henry (Heinrich) Lotz, Sr. (1835-1906), the eldest of the three brothers of Katherine ("Kate") Lotz Burkhardt. * * * * * The Greenwood Cemetery Association correctly records the name "Matthias Burkhardt, Jr." but, as the above photograph indicates, his and Katherine Lotz Burkhardt's grave monument bears the names "Katherine Burkhardt" and "Mathias Burkhardt, Jr.", Mathias perhaps being an Anglicized spelling of the original German "Matthias". Section A, Lot 47, on which this monument stands, was owned by Matthias Burkhardt, Sr. * * * * * On October 28, 1863, Mathias Burkhardt, Jr., wed Katherine ("Kate") Lotz in Butler County, Ohio, where they raised four daughters and six sons: Anna M. Burkhardt (1867-1872), Louise F. (Burkhardt) Protzman (1873-1967), Katherine M. (Burkhardt) Phillip (1875-1968), Amelia (Burkhardt) Heinzelman (1887-1987), August William Burkhardt (1865-1940), Christian Burkhardt (1869-1942), Edward Carl Burkhardt (1871-1919), Ernest Henry Burkhardt (1878-1936), John Frederick Burkhardt (1880-1955), and Jacob M. Burkhardt (1883-1950). All were born in Butler County, Ohio, and are buried there in Hamilton's Greenwood Cemetery.
