At the time of Matthias Burkhardt's birth on April 9, 1810, most of what is now Germany comprised German-speaking client states of Napoleonic France organized by Napoleon since 1806 within the Confederation of the Rhine (Rheinbund). Not until 1813-1814 did Prussian, Russian, and Austrian armies liberate these German-speaking states from domination by Napoleonic France. At the Congress of Vienna in 1814, representatives of the victorious Allies -- the Austrian Empire, Great Britain, the Kingdom of Prussia, and the Russian Empire --met in order to re-establish monarchies throughout the European continent and to make sure that France could no longer disturb the peace of Europe. Among the achievements of the Congress of Vienna was to establish the German Confederation within which more than thirty independent and predominantly German-speaking principalities worked to develop common objectives as well as resolve long-standing disputes. * * * * * The surname "Burkhardt", though not among the more frequently encountered German surnames in its several variations in spelling, is, nonetheless one of the best recognized worldwide, thanks to the publications of the Swiss historian, Jacob Burckhardt (1818-1897), whose "Renaissance in Italy" has been translated into almost all modern European languages and has remained continuously in print since its publication in German during the year 1860. To this day it remains the most influential historical essay about the Italian Renaissance and has inspired and conditioned scholarship on its subject for the past century and a half. Though scholars have critically evaluated many of Burckhardt's interpretations, all acknowledge his postive enduring influence on scholarship concerning the cultural, intellectual, and social history of the Italian Renaissnce. The creator and manager of this Memorial, Bruce Garver, assigned Jacob Burckhardt's "Renaissance in Italy" as the first required reading in the upper-division / graduate course that he taught at the University of Nebraska at Omaha in almost every other semester from 2004 to 2015. Jacob Burckhardt is not related to any of the more than thirty Burkhardt family members who are interred at Hamilton's Greenwood Cemetery, but Jacob Burckhardt is often the first name that comes to mind whenever the Burkhardt surname is mentioned. * * * * * Bruce Garver, who created this Memorial to Matthias Burkhardt, Sr., is a great-great nephew of Katherine ("Kate") Lotz Burkhardt, daughter-in-law of Matthias Burkhardt, Sr., and wife of Mathias (Matthias) Burkhardt, Jr. Katherine ("Kate") Lotz Burkhardt is one of the six sisters of Bruce Garver's great-grandfather, Henry (Heinrich) Lotz, Sr. (1835-1906). * * * * * Records of the Greenwood Cemetery Association identify "Katherine Burkhardt" as the wife of "Matthias Burkhardt, Sr., but do not provide her dates of birth and death or her maiden surname. Because Matthias Burkhart, Sr., and his wife, Katherine Burkhardt, resided in the Kingdom of Bavaria when their son Mathias (Matthias) Burkhardt, Jr., was born on August 6, 1838, at Unterhausen, Landsberg am Lech, in the Kingdom of Bavaria, it seems likely that they too may have been born on or near Bavarian territory. Their daughter, Louise F. Burkhardt was born on February 19, 1846, in the adjacent Kingdom of Wűrttemberg within the German Confederation. Until we can obtain documentary evidence of exactly where they were born, this Find a Grave Memorial will designate "Germany" as the birthplace of Matthias Burkhardt, Sr., and his wife, Katherine Burkhardt. We have not yet discovered the names of Katherine Burkhardt's parents, both of whom were presumably born in German-speaking Europe. * * * * * Matthias Burkhardt, Sr., immigrated to the United States in 1860 with his wife, Katherine Burkhardt , whose places and dates of birth and death have not yet been ascertained, and their two children -- Mathias (Matthias) Burkhardt, Jr., and Louise F. Burkhardt who would wed Michael Koffer (1876–1957) in the United States ... * * * * * Records of the Greenwood Cemetery Association state that German immigrant Matthias Burkhardt, Sr., died at the age of 86 on Juy 11, 1896, at Hamilton, Ohio, and was interred there on July 13, 1896, at Greenwood Cemetery in Section A, Lot/Row 47, Grave 03, formerly name Lot #26 owned by Matthias Burkhardt, Sr., and numbered in accordance with a grave-numbering system no longer used by Greenwood Cemetery. According to today's numbering system, Matthias Burkhardt's grave is believed to be located within Lot 47 of Section A. * * * * *
