Mrs. Benham was for a number of years a teacher in the grade school of Miller. Maude McVay was born at Marshalltown, Iowa, September 2, 1873. Her early life was spent in the community of her birth. At the age of 13 years she came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John McVay, to South Dakota. Mr. McVay was one of the early homesteaders in the vicinity of Vayland, which village was named after his family. Miss McVay was a teacher in the public schools of South Dakota for about 30 years, during which time, many of those whom we honor today received instruction at her hand. It was while teaching in the community south of Redfield that she became acquainted with Bernard Benham, with whom she was united in marriage on May 25, 1930. She was a member of the Redfield Methodist church for many years. Mrs. Benham passed away at the Baldwin hospital on Monday, September 30. Funeral services were held from the Redfield Methodist church Wednesday at 2 o'clock. The Rev. R.G. Minkler gave the memorial address. Miss Norma Stade and Mrs. A.B. Campbell sang two very beautiful selections, accompanied by Mrs. F.E. Clinite.
