Mavis Jane Jeffres, 91, of Grand Island, died Saturday, February 28, 2015 at Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island. Memorials are suggested to the family’s choice. Mrs. Jeffres was born on June 1, 1923 at North Loup, Nebraska to Edwin and Alice (Hanke) Schudel. She attended grade school at Barker country school and graduated from North Loup High School in 1940 where she excelled in vocal music. Mavis worked at the AAA (Triple A) office in Ord, NE the summers of 1939 and 1940. At age 16, following the death of her mother, she was a homemaker for her father and twin brother for two years. She was united in marriage to DeLysle Jeffres on September 27, 1942 at Grand Island. They lived in Scotia and then moved to her father’s farm near North Loup where they worked for her father. DeLysle joined the US Navy in 1944 and she continued to stay in North Loup and Scotia during his service for our country. After DeLysle was discharged from the Navy, the couple continued to farm near North Loup for six years. They then moved to Iowa for a year, then to Scotia and Central City for four years before moving to Corvallis, OR for a short time. In 1958 they returned to Scotia where she worked at Anthoney’s Market and Whitefoot Market for 18 years. They retired to Grand Island in 1989. Mavis was a member of the United Methodist Church in Scotia and was a member of the Faith Circle. She enjoyed homemaking, baking, gardening, doing crafts, and being a Girl Scout leader with her friend, Donna Foxworthy. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family. Survivors include a son, James (Barb) Jeffres of Ogallala; three daughters, Vicki Buckman, Kim Aldrich and Lori Lewis, all of Grand Island; ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three daughters, one great granddaughter, a sister and two brothers.
