Mrs. Duane McFadden accompanied Mrs. Jimmie Mauk as she sang "Rock of Ages" and "How Great Thou Art." . Mr. and Mrs. Leo Tanner and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Thomsen were in charge of flowers. . Mr. Porter, son of William and LaBelle (Wilkins) Porter, was born September 1, 1885, at Reno [Edna Township, Cass County, Iowa], and passed away Saturday, February 5, 1977, in San Diego, California, where he had a winter home. He was married to Ruth Smith April 4, 1916, and spent his early life on an Edna Township farm, before moving to Cumberland in 1943. He was employed at the Alcan Highway project in Alaska before retiring to Cumberland. He was a member of the Lyman Gospel Hall. . Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Marvin (Wanda) Penfold of Coon Rapids, Iowa, Mrs. Kenneth (Barbara) Malmberg of Des Moines and Mrs. Harold (Geneva) Layman of Dalhart, Texas; two sons, Max E. Porter of Massena and Eldon Porter of Cumberland; 17 grandchildren; a brother Joe Porter of Omaha, Nebraska and a sister, Mrs. Pearle Lehman of Griswold, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife, November 3, 1967; two daughters, Esther in April, 1936 and Mrs. Beth Schmidt, January, 1967. . [Obituary transcribed by Cathy Porter-Maynard]. . END. . ---------------------- . MILITARY: Earl W. Porter. . DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS. Earl W. Porter, second lieutenant, Air Service, observer, 7th Aviation Instruction Center. For extraordinary heroism in action near Lassigny, France, August 9, 1918. He, with First Lieut. Charles Raymond Blake, pilot, while on a reconnaissance expedition at a low altitude and beyond the enemy lines, was attacked by five German battle planes. Although wounded at the beginning of the combat, he shot down one of the enemy machines, and by cool and courageous operation of his gun, while his pilot skillfully manaeuvered the plane, fought off the others and made possible a safe return to friendly territory.
