Hargens 1913 – 1997 Max Hargens, 84, of Miller, S.D., died Thursday, July 17, 1997 at Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller. Funeral services were held Monday, July 21, 1997 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Miller, with the Rev. Marlin R. Vetter officiating. Burial was in the GA.R. Cemetery, Miller. Max Emil Hargens was born June 2, 1913 in Howell Township, Hand County, to John and Theresa (Dreier) Hargens. He was the tenth child in the family with 12 children. He grew up, lived and farmed in Howell Township. He ordered his first guitar for $3.98 from a Sears and Roebuck catalog and taught himself to play. By the time he was 15, Max and his older brother, George, on the fiddle, were playing for various events throughout the community, for $5 a night. Over the years, they played almost every Saturday night and for lots of Friday night wedding dances. They often played and sang for barn dances with neighbors. He retired from music in 1992. In 1937, he met the Howell country school teacher, Marie Siegling. They were married three years later on June 5, 1940 by Rev. Merritt Brohmhoff and had two children. In 1945, they moved to their present farm home in south Hand County. Although he may have been best known for his dance band, he was an active and lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He served as the superintendent of Sunday School for twelve years, church secretary for 20 years and the church choir for 47 years. He was a member of the Lion's Club, Moose Lodge and Pheasants Unlimited. He also worked for the ASCS twelve years and was elected to the ASCS County Committee for 25 years. He was recognized for his outstanding efforts in Pheasants Unlimited and awarded the first Wildlife Conservation Award in 1967. He was preceded in death by six brothers, George, Henry, Harry, John, August and William; five sisters, Bertha, Mrs. Adolph (Clara) Kerber, Mrs. Mike (Alvina) Weaver, Mrs. Roy (Olga) Pollock, Mrs. Walter (Theresa) Davis.
