Mrs John Barkyoumb who passed away on New Years day, was a wife and mother who delighted most in performing the various duties of the home and her splendid traits will always remain in fond memory to her family circle. Neighbors and friends also remember how often this good woman had been kind to them in times of sorrow or trouble. The story of her life is similar to that of other pioneer mothers. Melissa Chaffee, daughter of Ezra and Sarah Chaffee was born in Geneva, Tompkins County NY on February 18, 1848. Here she grew to young womanhood and later moved with her parents in Indianna. While living there her father died and in 1869 she came with her mother and the rest of the family to Kansas where they settled at Lasita in Riley county. On Feb 6 1871 she was united in marriage to John Barkyoumb at Clay Center and they homesteaded on a farm nine miles east of town constructing their own log cabin for their first house. And their home was always open to the new settlers who came to this section of the county. Many of them were taken into the Barkyoumb home until they could build for themselves some kind of a house to live in. Six children were born into their home, three of whom survive their mother. During the last few years Mrs Barkyoumb has failed somewhat because of her age, but she had not been seriously ill until about five days before her death. On January 1 1834, she passed away being at the time of her death eighty five years, ten months, and fourteen days of age. She was preceded in death by three children, Mrs Lulu Karrigan, Mrs Mae Bredberg and Jake Barkyoumb. Mrs Barkyoumb is survived by her husband John Barkyoumb, two sons Louis and John Barkyoumb Jr of Clay Center and one daughter Mrs Burton Avery of Miltonvale, Kansas, two sisters, Mrs Mary Barkyoumb of Clay Center and Mrs Theresa Harner of San Francisco, California, one brother Ben Chaffee of Wakefield Kansas, seven grandchildren, other relatives and many friends. During her residence in New York she had been a member of the Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and also sang in the choir. In the home she was a real mother and made it a place of hospitality to friends. Durning her many years of residence in Clay county she proved herself of that type of sturdy pioneer who have done so much to build up this community. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon with Rev Howard E Hansen of the Presbyterian church in charge. A short service was held a the Schwensen chapel at which two duets "Face to Face" and "Rock of Ages" were sung by Mrs Enid Cowell and Miss Edna Grainger, accompanied by Mrs Lawton Hanna. This was followed by a service in the Presbyterian church in Bala, where a quartet composed of Miss Sarah E Davies, Mrs L E Jones, Frank Williams and L E Jones sang "Rock of Ages", "Sometime We'll Understand" and Jesus Lover of my Soul". The Pianist was Mrs Blaine Dodson. The pall bearers were Elliott Bredberg, Will Karriagan, Tom Wilson, Frank Barkyoumb, Boyd Avery and Emmett Barkyoumb. Burial was made in the Bala cemetery. The beautiful flowers and the presence of a host of relatives and long time friends brought a message of love and sympathy.
