Oct 17 1843 and passed away at his home east of Clay Center, Kansas on April 8 1936 having reached the age of 95 years, 6 mos. His father was a native of France and emigrated to Canada soon after the revolution of 1812. He settled first in the province of Moscow, but subsequently came over to the United states ad located in Franklin Co., Vermont, where the subject of this sketch received his early education. John ventured out into the world on his own resources at an early age and was in the employ of Lawrence Brainard, a railroad conductor and merchant for eight years. Leaving New England in 1868, Mr Barkyoumb crossed the Mississippi and continued on his way to Clay Center, Kansas. He took a homestead nine miles east of Clay center, which was then very ??? removed from it's primitive conditions, having been the trampling ground of the Indians. He broke the prairie, built fences, erected buildings and soon found himself well established, with prospects for a competence that would provide for him in his declining years. And from that time until the final summons came, that was the Barkyoumb home. The same spirit of hospitality prevailing from the time of the first small sod house to the present home. On February 6 1871 John Barkyoumb was united in marriage with Melissa Chaffee and six children were born to this union. Mrs Barkyoumb was claimed by death on January 1 1934, and three children; Lulu Karrigan, May Bredberg and Jacob Barkyoumb are with her in the Great Beyond. Two sons and a daughter survive their parents; Louis of Clay Center, John at home and Mrs Edith Avery of Miltonvale, Kansas. One sister Mrs Victorian Labounty lives in Vermont. There are several grandchildren: Frank Barkyoumb of Clay Center, Elliott Bredberg of Fort Worth Texas, Wm Kerrigan of Bala, Edith M Boyd, Ruby and June Avery of Mltonvale, also numerous nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends will remember him most kindly. John Barkyoumb The funeral service for John Barkyoumb, who passed away last Wednesday was held on Friday afternoon a the Presbyterian church at Bala, after a short service at the Schwensen Mortuary. Rev Howard E Harsen was in charge. Four duets "Will There be Any Stars", "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere", "The Old Rugged Cross" and "The End of the Way", were Sung by Mrs Leda Paul and Mrs Ruth Martin, accompanied by Mrs Nora Neal Carlson. The pall bearers were Frank Barkyoumb, William Karriagan, Bert and Boyd Avery, Fred and Ed Barkyoumb. Burial was made in Bala cemetery. Many long time friends, the family in paying respect to this good man. The following tribute and obituary portrays the life of this study person. From every community there are those men who are beloved, not for what they posses of this world, but for their spirit of friendship and good will. John Barkyoumb who completed a life journey more than 93 years on Wednesday April 8th, was rich in friendship, extending over those many years. He was generous and of simple philosophy in life. His home was always open to relatives and friends, and it would be hard to toll how many have found protection and shelter there. His children and grandchildren ??? to him because he always welcomed the in true sincerity and hospitality. To say that he was a good man, a worthy citizen, a kind ad generous neighbor. In morely repeating what everyone knows. This was a new country when John Barkyoumb came here and ???? on the Kansas prairies. Neighbors were few and comfort were little known, but these pioneers had the courage and perseverance to work and win through to success, making possible the advantages of schools, churches and conveniences the present generation enjoys. We owe a debt of gratitude to these older people that can only be paid by carrying on their good work.
