JACOB THOMAS.--The sad news reached this city last Saturday of the death of Mrs. Jacob Thomas, of Randolph, who passed from the scenes of her earthly existence on that morning at about 10 o'clock from paralysis of a few weeks duration. Deceased was an early settler of Sidney as she came with her parents, Joshua and Rebecca VanEaton, in 1855 and for a time lived where E.W. Hutchison now resides on Main street or as the place may be better known as the old home of William Eaton. Later she moved to the property now occupied by her brother, W.L. VanEaton, Sr., just across the street west of the Methodist church where she lived for several years. On August 4, 1840, the subject of this sketch was born near Thorntown, Boone county, Indiana, and there grew to the years of about 15 when she came west and as above stated located in Sidney. She was united in marriage to Frederick Bodinus in 1874 and to them one son was born, Adolphus Bodinus, of Los Angeles, California, who reached the home of his mother only in time to attend the funeral services which were held at the home on Tuesday the 8th inst., at 10 o'clock in the morning conducted by Rev. J.E. Matheny, pastor of the Methodist church of Randolph. At the close of these services the procession formed and wended its way to the Sidney cemetery where interment was made by the side of her first husband, Frederick Bodinus, who departed this life about twenty-eight years ago. Her second marriage was to Jacob Thomas of Randolph, in September 1890, where they lived until her death. She was one of twelve children, six of whom preceded her to the grave. Those living are, W.L. VanEaton, Sr., J.J.VanEaton and Mrs.E.B. Spratlen, of Sidney, Iowa; James VanEaton, of Hamburg, Iowa; Mrs. James Lowe, of Davenport, Nebraska. The pall bearers were as follows, who were her nephews: W.L.VanEaton, Jr., T.L. VanEaton, Roscoe VanEaton, F.R. Shannon, C.E. Spratlen, and her stepson, Ira Thomas. Deceased united with the Christian church in Sidney when a girl, but later joined the Presbyterian church at this place and while residing at Randolph she affiliated with the Methodist church, these changes doubtless having been made solely for convenience to the place of worship. Mrs. Thomas was known to a large acquaintance and was highly respected by all. Many were the good deeds that she cheerfully did and many were the helpful words that she spoke and many were the kindly thoughts that she expressed for the uplift and betterment of all, but the mist-wing touched her spirit and she responded to the summons and her works do follow her.
