Read More	THE FREMONT COUNTY HERALD September 16, l910 ONE OF THE COUNTY'S OLDEST CITIZENS CALLED BY DEATH'S ANGEL - - At his home on Illinois street last Friday evening just at the sunset of day, occurred the death of William Louis Van Eaton, a pioneer resident of this section, aged almost 79 years. The deceased was born in Boone county, Indiana, November 30, l831. He grew to manhood in his native county and in 1853 was married to Miss Mary Ball. In the fall of the same year Mr. Van Eaton and his bride, together with a brother, A.J., now deceased, left the state of their nativity and journeyed westward--overland, of course, locating at Sidney and from that far-off date to the time of his death he has known no other home. His first location after arriving here was one and one-half miles west of town on what is now known as the Aaron Campbell farm. Here he remained for about a year when he removed to a farm five miles southeast of Sidney, and the following year again moved to the west side, to the Ben Hatten farm, now owned by Will Elliott. In __?__ he moved into town, occupying first the F.E. Mann property on Main Street, later the Dr. Morris property and afterward moving to the home just north of the square where he remained until the end. To his union with Miss Ball seven children were born, two of whom died in infancy, and a daughter, Jennie departed this life at the age of 22. The four surviving are Mrs. F.C. Cromwell of Belle Plaine, Kansas; Charles W. and Frank B. who form a partnership in a retail hardware business at Ft. Cobb, Oklahoma, and Will of Sidney. Mrs. Van Eaton died in (1869?). In 1876 he was again married, this time to Miss Mary E. Cloud, and to them three children were born, one of whom died in early childhood. The two remaining are Tom, who lives at home, and Roscoe, a fireman on the Burlington running out of Lincoln. Mr. Van Eaton was one of a family of 12 children, only four of whom are now living, Joseph J. and Mrs. E.B. Spratlen of Sidney, James of Glenwood, and Mrs. J.P. Lowe of Davenport, Nebraska. Coming here as he did when Sidney was but a straggling hamlet--two years after the town had been designated as a county seat, and before the original cottonwood courthouse was barely complete; ever taking an active interest in the affairs of his home town and surrounding community, and retaining an active mind and clear memory to the very last, there were few men indeed who knew more Fremont county history or who could relate it in a more intelligible manner. Although he had been a resident of Sidney for more than half a century, Mr. Van Eaton up to a few years ago was actively engaged in farming. He had been a land owner almost from the day of his arrival and at one time his holdings were quite extensive, but a few years ago the bulk of his property was portioned among his living children, he retaining only sufficient to provide for his needs in old age. Never but once had he engaged in any other pursuit, and that but briefly. In 1857 he outfitted a freighting crew which he conducted across the plains to Denver with a trainload of meat. Returning home he organized another outfit and started on a second trip but sold out at Nebraska City and returned to farm life. Mr. Van Eaton had never held nor sought public office, though often urged to do so. He was not a affiliated with any of the fraternal organizations, nor was he a member of any church. But for all that he was a good man, public-spirited and generous, an obliging neighbor and a true friend. He was ever liberal in his gifts to religious and educational enterprises and to projects for the betterment of the community in general. Many are they who mourn his loss and the profound sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved widow and children. Funeral services were held from the home Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Dr.E. Dickinson, and the remains were laid to rest in Sidney cemetery. ——- Suggested edit: Add additional children: 1) son John J.
