Melvin Chris Hanson was born on May 16, 1915, in Dayton, Iowa, the son of Chris and Mae (Nelson) Hanson. He grew up in the Dayton area and attended Dayton Consolidated School. Melvin was united in marriage to Evelyn Larson on March 21, 1937, and the couple farmed south of Dayton. Evelyn passed away on December 2, 1967. On March 1, 1969, Melvin married Maurine Hartquist. The couple moved into Dayton in September of 1977 due to health reasons. In July of 2000 they moved to the Grandview Apartments in Dayton, and in 2003 moved to Friendship Haven, Heritage Apartments in Fort Dodge. Melvin enjoyed the Dayton Labor Day Rodeo and drove his two-pony hitch in the rodeo parade for 40 years. In 1949, he was the parade Grand Marshall. The bomb that signals the start of the rodeo was lit 30 years by Melvin. In 1997, Melvin was elected to the Hall of Fame at the Iowa State Fair as one of the original founders of the Iowa State Draft Pony Association. He has shown Shetland ponies and mini mules in competition, at parades, horse shows, and State Fair enjoying this hobby. Melvin was a lifelong member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Dayton, serving on the church board and ushering. Survivors include his wife, Maurine Hanson of Fort Dodge, Iowa; two sons, Arden (Alice) Hanson of Olathe, Kansas, and Kirby (Kay) Hanson of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; a daughter, Kristie Hall of Wilmington, North Carolina; step-son, Leroy (Betty) Hartquist of Fort Dodge, Iowa; nine grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; one brother, Emory (Imogene) Hanson of Dayton, Iowa; and a sister, Loretta Hanson of Glidden, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Hazel Hanson of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Millie Hanson of Spirit Lake, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Evelyn Hanson; sister, Viola Hanson; two brothers, Paul Hanson and Russell Hanson; son-in-law, David Hall; and a brother-in-law, Don Hansen. Memorials may be left to either Trinity Hospice or the Dayton Rescue Squad.
