Wheatley Merl Hattie Wheatley, 87, 407 South D., died Monday evening at Jefferson County Hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. Kermit Black officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials have been established to the Peoples Church, Batavia, and Jefferson County Hospital Auxiliary Lifeline. Mrs. Wheatley was born May 8, 1898 at Pleasant Plain, the daughter of Barrett C. and Ida Ginther Johnson. She grew up in the Pleasant Plain community, and lived on a farm near Douds for many years before moving to Fairfield, where she had lived since 1946. In 1916, she married Charles Lewis, who died Aug. 15, 1942. In 1951, she married Caleb Wheatley. He died Jan. 14, 1960. She is survived by a son, Roy Lewis* of Packwood; three daughters, Lucile Hining, Fairfield, Mary Kawano, Beulah Lewis, both of Chicago; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mamie Simmons of Clearwater, Fla., Mabel Schafer of Eldon, Velma Horne of Fairfield, and one brother, Gilbert Johnson of Waukee. A licensed practical nurse, Mrs. Wheatley worked for many years at Jefferson County Hospital, and did private duty nursing for several area people after her retirement. She was a member of Rebekah Lodge 96, and had been a member of Eastern Star and White Shrine. * See: Roy Everett Lewis.
