Description	:	The son of Harry and Anna VerSteeg Zickel was born on a farm near Galesburg, IA. Mr. Zickel attened Jasper County schools. Other than time spent in the Army in World War II in the South Pacific, he spent his entire life in Jasper County. Merle was united in marriage on February 10, 1946 at the Mt. E. of... Read More	The son of Harry and Anna VerSteeg Zickel was born on a farm near Galesburg, IA. Mr. Zickel attened Jasper County schools. Other than time spent in the Army in World War II in the South Pacific, he spent his entire life in Jasper County. Merle was united in marriage on February 10, 1946 at the Mt. Zion Methodist Church to Dorothy Van Baren Zickel. They lived in Newton where Merle was first an electrician and later worked for the Parsons Company for 3 years. In 1950 they moved to a farm S. E. of Newton where they spent the next 40 years. Merle was an organized person and on the farm he put the trait to good use, for everything there was a place and everything was returned to the place where it was taken from. One of his greatest joys was working with Dorothy in their timber, cutting down dead trees, cutting up fallen branches, then cleaning the floor of the grove till it was like their yard under the trees. As well as working with his livestock was his love and relaxation. In 1989 he and Dorothy retired and moved to Newton. Soon after moving to Newton his health began to fail. He was a member of the Christian Church, Jasper County Farm Bureau and Sully Co-Op. On May 16th, he passed away leaving as survivors his wife Dorothy, daughter and son-in-law Kathryn and Larry Milburn, two grandchildren and one brother, Clifton. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Chester. Rev. Jerry Brown, pastor of First United Methodist Church officiating assisted by Ronald Hall, will conduct services. Burial will be in newton Memorial Park Cemetery. Obituary was published in the Newton Daily News newspaper and also Reese Chapel funeral program
