Read More	Michael Lawrence Purcell (November 18, 1954 - September 11, 2011) Michael Lawrence Purcell, 56, of Atchison, KS, passed away, suddenly on Sunday, September 11, 2011 at the Atchison Hospital. Mike was born November 18, 1954 in Atchison the son of Lawrence M. "Larry" and Bonnie Ann (Jones) Purcell. He attended St. Benedict's Grade School and graduated from Maur Hill in 1973. Mike attended Kansas State University and studied photography. He was a Maintenance Engineer for the Atchison Hospital (23 years), St. Francis Academy and the Atchison County Sheriff's Office. Mike was a member of the Atchison Jaycee's Club where he had served as President, Kansas Regional Director and JCI Senator; Atchison Elk's Lodge #647 where he was an Exalted Ruler, Sergeant of Arms and Co-Founder for the Elk's D.A.R.E. Golf Tournament; V.F.W. Post #1175, Past President of the Men's V.F.W. Auxiliary; Atchison Planning Commission; Atchison Park Board; Atchison Yacht Club; the Bellevue Country Club; Atchison Bass Fishing Club and had coached youth baseball. Mike was very involved in the city of Atchison and was instrumental in helping develop the Veteran's Memorial Park on the riverfront among many other activities in Atchison. He was always one to lend a helping hand whenever needed. Mike was very talented; there wasn't much of anything he couldn't do when he set his mind to it. In his free time, Mike loved being with family and friends, golfing, boating and cheering on his Kansas Jayhawks and Kansas City Chiefs. Mike married Gail Robinson on May 12, 1978 in Atchison. Gail survives of the home. Additional survivors include his parents; Larry and Bonnie Purcell, Atchison, a son; Jason Purcell, Prairie Village, KS, two daughters; Jodi (Purcell) Taylor and her husband, Chris, Gardner, KS, Amy (Purcell) White, Topeka, KS, three sisters; Sharon Kuhn, Debbie Stone and Diane Dame, all of Atchison, and two grandchildren; Dalton and Kaitlyn White, Topeka, KS. Mike was preceded in death by his grandparents; Frank & Mary Purcell and Loren & Ann Jones. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday September 16, 2011 at St. Benedict's Church with Fr. Gerard Senecal, OSB as Celebrant and Abbot Barnabas Senecal, OSB as Concelebrant. Burial of cremains will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A parish rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m., Thursday at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. Memorials in honor of Mike are suggested to the Veteran's Memorial Park Flag Fund or the Mike Purcell Memorial Fund and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
