August 23, 1895 - Carroll Sentinel - Sunday afternoon one of the saddest tragedies which have occurred in north Carroll township was transacted, Michael Beyer jr., age 19, left home on Wieland place to visit with friends on the Daczewitz farm about two miles away. On leaving home he put his gun in the buggy thinking he would see some quail. After spending several hours very pleasantly with a number of young folks who had congregated at the farm house where he was visiting, he concluded to start home. One of the neighor's boys got in the buggy with him. They had gone but a few rods when a quail was seen and Mike shot it. Another flew over in the field and he concluded to go after it. In crossing tbe fence he laid his gun on the gate and after he got over he caught hold of the muzzle of the gun and attempted to pull it over. The hammer struck against the boards and discharged the whole load of No. 12 shot into his abdomen. He fell to the ground and told the boy who was with him that he guessed he had enough, but jumped up and extinguished his clothes which were set on fire from the discharge. The boy ran back to the house which they had just left and gave the alarm. The parents were notified and medical aid summoned. It was found upon examination that the intestines were practically riddled and Dr. Kelly informed his parents that it was utterly impossible to save his life. He remained perfectly conscious and boldly faced death. He recognized all who called on him and stood his sufferings without a murmner. The accident occurred about 4:30 and about 10 at night he quietly passed away. His mother, when she saw her son, fainted and required the doctor's assistance. She as well as all who saw the young man were overcome with grief. The case is a very sad one and calls for the sympathy of all. The funeral was held Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock at Ss. Peter & Paul's church.
