Childers, 41, 106 Congress St., was burned to death early this morning when fire gutted a bedroom in her home where she was sleeping. Emporia Fire Chief Claude Lang Jr. listed careless smoking as a possible cause of the fire. He said the blaze started in the mattress of Mrs. Childers' bed. Firemen received the fire alarm at 3:15 a.m. this morning from Mrs. Childers' son, Ronnie. Firemen said the boy was staying next door with his grandmother, Mrs. Alta Brecht, 102 Congress St. An unidentified man came to the Brecht home and said the Childers' house was on fire. Mrs. Childers' son then called the fire department. Chief Lang said Mrs. Childers was burned to death before she could be rescued. Three firemen, Captain Leroy Thomas, William Brooks, and Leo King, fought their way into the burning bedroom to bring the body out. The blaze was confined to the bedroom in the southwest corner of the home, but Chief Lang said the fire caused extensive smoke and heat damage to the rest of the one-story structure. Firemen were at the scene almost two hours, and poured 200 gallons of water into the room before the blaze was extinguished. Chief Lang, Sheriff B. J. Johnson, and Deputy State Fire Marshall Eugene Hastings are continuing their investigation of the fire today. Sheriff Johnson said that Mrs. Childers' husband, Edward F. Childers, was discovered asleep in his car in front of the burning house. He submitted to a blood alcohol test and Sheriff Johnson said he was not intoxicated. He told the Sheriff that he had been ordered out of the house earlier by Mrs. Childers. AUTOPSY IS ORDERED An autopsy on the body has been ordered, and Sheriff Johnson said he is still awaiting the results. The last previous fatality from fire occurred Aug. 4th, 1952, when Miss Nevaline Carpenter, 16, died after receiving burns from a flash fire in the basement of her home at 612 Sherman St. On March 5th, 1960, Gary Beemer, 5, was fatally burned in a fire that originated in a gas heater in the bathroom of his parents' home near Hartford. Louise M. Brecht, the daughter of Edward A. and Alta Whinery Brecht, was born Jan. 31st, 1920, in Cherryvale, and was married to Edward Childers March 19th, 1940, in Emporia. She was a member of the Free Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband and one son, Ronnie Earl, of the home; one daughter, Carolyn, 627 Sylvan St.; her mother, who lives at 102 Congress St.; two brothers, Harold E. Brecht, Joplin, Mo., and Earl E. Brecht, Mr. Vernon, Mo., and four sisters, Mrs. Everett Yeubanks, Cherryvale, Mrs. John Lamb, Riverside Trailer Court; Mrs. L. P. Collins, 127 Congress St., and Mrs. S. J. Wendling, Rt. 4. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Roberts-Blue-Barnett Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Chapman, pastor of the Free Methodist Church. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.
