Services were held Monday, February 12. 1996. at South St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Elk Point. SD. the Rev. Arthur Erickson officiating. Music was the congregation singing "Beyond the Sunset." Mildred was born July 25, 1910, in Rosemond, Illinois, the daughter of Joseph and Odell (Jones) Haines. She came to South Dakota in 1931 with her uncle and lived there for many years. On August 21, 1934 she married Arthur Staum in Savannah, Missouri. They farmed Arthur's family farm until moving to Akron, Iowa in 1984. Arthur died July 24. 1992. They were foster parents to her nephew, Clifford Haines, since he was seven and one-half years old. She was a member of South Saint Paul Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A., and Akron Senior Citizens. Survivors include her sister, Vaudeth and her husband Ralph Aaron of Hawarden, Iowa; her nephew, Clifford Haines and his wife Esther of Elk Point, South Dakota; three grandchildren: Tim of Falcon Heights, Minnesota, Sandy and her husband Tim O'Kane of Omaha, Nebraska, and Todd of Minneapolis, Minnesota; one great-grandson, Will O'Kane; her daughter-in-law, Joyce Staum of Elk Point, South Dakota; and Clifford and Esther's children and grandchildren: Clifford, Jr. and his wife Mary and their children, Ashley, Erik, and Kajsa of Vermillion, South Dakota. Cristy and her husband Dan Harkness and their children Melisa and Nicole, and Colette and her husband Rick Livingston and their children, Angela, Amanda, Andrew, and Cheryl Haines all of Elk Point, South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Carrol; her parents; three sisters, Marie, Virginia, and Edith; one brother Herbert and two brothers who died in infancy.
