Eslick, 91, formerly of Stratford, Iowa, passed away at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, Iowa on Monday afternoon, August 19, 1996 due to heart failure. She has been a resident at the Eastern Star Masonic Home since April of 1981. She was born on March 10, 1905 in Stratford, Iowa the daughter of Sanford and Tilda (Blomberg) Johnson. Eslick, 91, formerly of Stratford, Iowa, passed away at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, Iowa on Monday afternoon, August 19, 1996 due to heart failure. She has been a resident at the Eastern Star Masonic Home since April of 1981. She was born on March 10, 1905 in Stratford, Iowa the daughter of Sanford and Tilda (Blomberg) Johnson. On November 18, 1928 she married Audrey Q. Eslick at Stratford, Iowa. Mildred was a graduate of Stratford High School and the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in Des Moines, Iowa as a Registered Nurse in 1928. From 1933 to 1939 she worked in the County Nursing Program in Ottertail County, Minnesota. In 1936, she received her Registered Nurse certificate from the Minnesota State Board. In 1939, she was assigned to Minneapolis Health Services, first as Public Health Nurse, and later as Mental Health Course Nurse in charge of the North Office. During this time, Mildred attended night school receiving her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota in 1940. In November of 1941, she left Minneapolis for Washington, D.C. where she was assigned as Assistant Nurses Consultant to Public Health Services Office in Bethesda, Maryland. She later transferred to the New Orleans Office Headquarters, working in the states of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and South Carolina. In December of 1944, Mildred was appointed Senior Assistant Nurse Officer with the rank of U.S. Major, receiving special training at the University of Pennsylvania in Fever Chemo Therapy. She continued her duties at Washington D.C. until June of 1946 when she was discharged. After her service duties, she and her husband returned to rural Lehigh, Iowa where they lived until the death of her husband in 1967, when she moved to Stratford, Iowa to make her home. She was employed with the State Health Department Polio and Nursing Home Program and for the Webster County Health Department for a number of years. Mildred was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church of Stratford, the Order of Eastern Star Magi Chapter #139 of Boone, Iowa, and a veteran of World War II serving as a nurse. She was preceded in death by her husband Audrey in 1967, one brother, Melvin S. Johnson; two sisters, Irene Johnson and Helen Beach; two nephews, Melvin H. Johnson and Arvin Johnson. Survivors include a nephew and his wife, Bob and Betty Beach of Plymouth, Minnesota; a sister-in-law Lucille "Van" Johnson of Lehigh, Iowa; a cousin Cecil A. Johnson of Omaha, Nebraska; and 10 great-nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Thursday afternoon, August 22 at 1:30 p.m. at the Calvary United Methodist Church in Stratford, Iowa with Rev. Sue-Ellen Sherman officiating. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery north of Stratford. Memorials may be given to the Calvary United Methodist Church in Stratford, Iowa. Stark-Welin Funeral Directors in Stratford, Iowa are in charge of arrangements.
