Description	:	MILDRED NIELSEN Pocahontas -- Mildred Nielsen, 90, died Tuesday, December 24, 2002, at the Pocahontas Community Hospital. Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 28, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Rolfe with Rev. David Peterson officiating. Interment was in Summit Hill Cemetery in Pocahontas. Survivors include her husband, J.P. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Lawrence Christensen; and two sisters, Hazel Thomsen and Lucile Flickinger; one grandson, David Nielsen; and one great-grandson, Micah Foster; two brothers-in-law; and one nephew. Mildred Marie Christensen was born November 17, 1912 at Ware, Iowa to Edward and Mary (Barnhardt) Christensen. She was baptized in the Lutheran Church in Pomeroy and attended the Methodist Church in Plover. Mildred was confirmed as an adult in Nain Lutheran Church in Rolfe on January 23, 1944, and became a member of St. Paul's Lutheran when Nain and Trinity merged in 1948 to form St. Paul's. Mildred sincerely believed in Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior and was blessed by baptism in the power of the Holy Spirit. Mildred grew up on a farm south of Plover and helped her father with the farm work. She attended school in Plover and was graduated from Plover High School where she enjoyed singing in a sextet and playing basketball. Mildred attended Iowa State Teachers' College at Cedar Falls and received her teaching certificate. She taught country school in Pocahontas County. On December 1, 1934, she married Jens Peter Nielsen at Fort Dodge. The couple farmed near Havelock, Graettinger, D.M.T., and Rolfe. They retired from farming in 1960. During her years on the farm, Mildred enjoyed raising large gardens and canning for the family. Mildred also worked as a receptionist and secretary for Dr. Knowels at Fort Dodge. In 1960, they moved to Laurens, Iowa, where she worked for Hakes and Mefford Industry. When they later moved to Pocahontas, Mildred was the proprietor of the gift shop at the teepee by the Pocahontas Indian statue. One of Mildred's greatest joys was greeting travelers from all over the world, telling them about the Pocahontas Indian statue, and having them sign the guest book. When Mildred and J.P. retired from business in the mid 90's, Mildred continued to enjoy having a small garden in the summer and giving away most of the produce. In November 2002, Mildred became a resident at the Rolfe Care Center where she and J.P. celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary with family and friends on December 1.
