Read More	Minerva, daughter of Jane and Frank C. Atkin, was born near Portsmouth, Sciota County, Ohio, October 30, 1861, and died at her home in Nelson, Nebraska, January 20, 1940 after an illness of eight months, at the age of 78 years, 2 months and 20 days. She grew to womanhood in the locality of her birth and on May 9 of 1886 was married to Joseph Bonser Goodrich of Sciotoville, Ohio. After a brief visit with the home folks, the young couple came to Nelson, arriving on May 26. The established their home in Nelson where they sharred the labors, joys and sorrows of that early day. She has had continuous residence in Nelson since that date. To this union ten children were born, three dying in infancy. Her husband preceded her in death in January, 1921. The surviving children are: O.L. Goodrich of Hastings, R.C. Goodrich of Stevenson, Wash.; Mrs. Marie Pfeiffer of Hartley, Iowa; Mrs. Geneve Ferebee and Mrs. Helene Ferebee both of Nelson; Mrs. Beulah White of Greeley, Colorado; and Harold J. Goodrich of Neah Bay, Washington. (All were present at the funeral but the two sons in Washington.) She was a charter member of the Methodist church (sic) of Nelson and was always keenly interested in the work and progress of the church. She arrived in Nelson when it was a small village without a railroad, and was actively interested in every phase of the growth and development of the community. Her friends were legion and all were inspired by her keen intellect. Her children cherish many of her original poems sent them on special occasions. The following original poem, with its very personal footnote, is a favorite of her children, and tells of her love for the beauties of nature about her: Sunset on Juan De Fuca Strait At Neah Bay, Washington. In my chair by the side of the window After work of the long day is done, All my worries and weariness vanish While I look on the setting sun. "Tis a glorious sight to behold it, As it hides in the waters its face; No words can describe the sheer beauty Which on sky and water takes place. There is gold and orange and purple, There is crimson and mauve and rose, There is silver and pink all belended In colors which nobody knows. Then soon in the gathering twilight The glory fades out out of the sky, The ripples resume their own color And one sunset more has passed by. "I witnessed this lovedly sunset many times sitting beside Harold at the window. It is one of god's wonderful movies which neither brush, pen nor tongue can depict or describe and which once seen, is never fogotten." She leaves to mourn her passing three sons, four daughters, 22 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren; two brothers in California, (one brother preceded her in death) three sisters in Ohio; a host of other dear relatives and many friends. The funeral service was held in the Methodist church (sic) Monday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by the pastor, Rev. V.R. Daniels, assisted by Harry G. Parsons, pastor of the First Christian church (sic) in Hastings. The music was furnished by a quartette: Jas. F. Murphy, Mrs. W.L. Portwood, Mrs. Jas. F. Murphy and Warren C. Hall.
