Minerva Ellen Greenly was born March 16, 1843 in Highland County, Ohio and came to Iowa in 1876. She was married to This Means in Corning July 31, 1879, and the commenced keeping house on the farm where she died, five miles northeast of Villisca. No children were born to this union, but since a baby, Miss Grace Wilson, their nieces, shared the comforts and pleasures of their happy home. The funeral was held from the residence last Saturday afternoon and she remains the remains were buried in the Villisca Cemetery. Rev. J. K. Driver conducting the services. In the death of Mrs. Means, Mesdames, E. J. Mann, A. J. Waterman, and This Goodwin of this city, Mrs. A. G. Harris of Omaha, and F. P. Greenly of Red Oak mourn the loss of a kind sister, Miss Wilson the absence of a motherly aunt, and the community the departure of Christian neighbor and friend. Mr. Means died about six years ago. Villisca Review, Thursday, August 7, 1870, page 3 Mrs. Minerva Means, widow of Thomas Means, died at her home five miles northwest of Nodaway, last Friday, November 4, 1904. Her maiden name was Minerva Ellen Greenlee. She was born in Highland County, Ohio in March 13, 1843, coming to Iowa in 1876. In 1878, she was married to Thomas Means in Corning. Mr. and Mrs. Means died childless, but a niece, Miss Grace Wilson has been living with them. She had three sisters living in Villisca, Mesdames Thomas Goodwin, E. J. Mann, and J. A. Waterman. She also had a sister in Omaha, Mrs. Harris. Her brother, E. P, Greenlee, is county attorney in Montgomery County. The funeral was held at the home, Saturday afternoon, Rev. J. K. Driver conducting the service. The burial was in Villisca Cemetery. Adams County Free Press, November 12, 1904, page 7 MINERVA ELLEN GREENLEE daughter of Thomas Franklin Greenlee and Eliza Ann Pearce, was born March 13. 1843 at Bourneville, Ross Co., Ohio; married GEORGE PIERCE; married second July 31, 1879, THOMAS CLEMENS MEANS (his third wife), born September 15. 1835 at Plattsburg, Clinton Co., Missouri, died January 6, 1898 at Villisca, Iowa, son of Thomas Means and Elizabeth Livingston. He was a farmer : Democrat : Cumberland Presbyterian. No Children. Mr. Means had six children by former marriages. MINERVA ELLEN GREENLEE attended public schooL In her fifteenth year she united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and soon became an active worker in the church. She was especially interested in the Sabbath school work, and for eight years was teacher of the boys Bible class, and Li- brarian and Secretary for a number of years. In September, 1867 she commenced teaching in the primary department of the public school at New Petersburg. Highland County, Ohio, and continued there four years. Afterward she taught in Highland County until the fall of 1875, when she went to the home of her uncle, James Greenlee, near Geneseo, Henry County, Illinois. After visiting with relatives in that vicinity until April, 1876, she went to Villisca, Iowa, where her mother and the other members of the family were located. She again taught school for three years, then was married to Thomas Clemens Means. He was one of the pioneers of Montgomery County, coming there with his mother in 1851. For many years he was an active member of the Cumber- land Presbyterian Church, organized in that neighborhood, and holding its meetings at the Means schoolhouse. For thirty years he was a ruling elder of the church, and for many years Sabbath school superintendent. At various times he served as president and treasurer of the township school board, and always performed his official duties with fidelity. Mrs. Means united with her husband in his church work. She was secretary and a teacher in the Sunday school and, after her husband's death, became its superintendent, and also teacher of the old ladies Bible class. She has always been greatly interested in missions, and was for two years Presbyterial Secretary of the Women's Missionary organization of the "West Iowa Presbytery" of the Cumberland Presbyterian church. She has also served as Secretary and President of the Auxiliary Society of her church. She has brought up her sister Mary's child, Grace Greenlee Wilson, taking her when only seventeen months old, and is educating her for a teacher.
