At an early hour Friday morning, April 7, she closed her eyss to the cares of this world, and passed peacefully away. Mrs. Beck, who was in her forty-second year, was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ephraim Crouse, of Upper Branch. She had been in failing health for the past several months, but no one suspected her illness was so serious or that the end was so near, and her death has been a great shock to everyone. A devoted member of the Baptist Church, a loving wife and tender mother, her passing has made an emptiness in the hearts of her loved ones which can never be filled. We are prone to think our loss is greater than we can bear, nevertheless, we say, with Christ, in Gethsemane, "Not my will, oh God, but Thine be done." She was buried Monday afternoon, April 10, and despite the bad roads, a large crowd gathered to pay their last respects to one who was so early taken from our midst. There was a short service at the house, followed by one at the church, where her pastor, Rev. M.B. Whitman, spoke comfortingly from Phillippians 1:21,"For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain." The hymns sung were beautifully appropiate, the one at the house being, "Shall We Gather at the River." Those at the church, "Abide With Me," ' My Saviour First of All," and " Home of the Soul." She leaves behind her, beside the husband, father and mother, already referred to, three children, Ernest, 19; Willis, 14; and Kathleen, 11; two brothers, Alvin and Maynard of Upper Branch; and a large number of other relatives. One brother, Freddie, predeceased her by sixteen years. May those who are bereft find comfort in the words of the Master, "As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you."
