He departed this life Sunday evening, May 21, 2000 at the Harlan County Hospital in Alma, Nebraska where he had been a patient since last Wednesday. His age was 78 years, four months and twenty seven days. "Mitch", as everyone came to know him, was baptized as a child in the Methodist Church in Huntley. He attended school in Huntley, transferring to Alma mid-semester of his Junior high school year. He graduated from high school with the class of 1939. Following high school, Mitch worked for his father at the Richman IGA grocery store in Alma. On June 20, 1943, Mittchel Harvey Richman was united in marriage to Miss Marjorie Lee Calkins at the Methodist parsonage in Alma by Rev. Otto Michel. To this union two sons were born, Michael Lee and Thomas Grant. Thomas preceded Mitch in death in 1952 at the age of 5 years. On February 3, 1944, Mitch enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the South Pacific. He received the Victory Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal. He was honorably discharged on April 5, 1946 at Great Lakes, Illinois. Mitch and Marj purchased the grocery store from Harry in 1953 and operated the business for twenty years or until 1973. In 1974, Mitch began traveling on the road, selling cattle equipment for Flemming Manufacturing Company in Hastings. They resided in Hastings in 1978, returning to Alma in 1979. After returning to Alma, Mitch traveled on the road selling Livestock equipment for Harold Haeker, owner of NebKan in Alma. Mitch worked as office manager and salesman at the John Yant Ford in Alma and later as a salesman for Tripe Motor Company. He worked for ten years at the Banta-Torrey Funeral Home in Alma and as caretaker of the Alma Cemetery for seven years. Retirement was just not part of Mitch's nature. He was a member of the Alma United Methodist Church, having transferred his membership from the Huntley United Methodist Church, was a member of the Jackin Lodge #146, A.F.&A.M. of Holdrege, and formerly of the Harlan Lodge #116, A.F.&A.M. at Alma, the Tehama Temple Shrine and the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, both of Hastings, the V.F.W. Post #5884 and the Fay Cady American Legion Post #118, both of Alma, the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #2062 of Holdrege, the Eagles Aerie #3132 of Hastings and was an Admiral and honorary member of the Navy of Nebraska. In addition to his second son Thomas, Mitch was preceded in death by his father on May 9, 1982; his mother on November 22, 1987; and three sisters, Erma Cape Dixon and her husbands Jim Cape and Harley Dixon, Violet Engstrom and her husband Don and Georgia Pothast Rush and her husbands Joe Pothast and Harold Rush. He leaves to mourn his passing his loving and devoted wife Marjorie of their home in Alma; one son Mike Richman and wife Sally of Alma; two grandchildren Jeff Richman of Arvada, Colo. and Jenna Brown of Kearney; one great grandson Conner Brown at home with his mother in Kearney; other relatives and a host of friends. Memorial services were held Friday, May 26, 2000 at the United Methodist Church in Alma, Nebraska with Rev. Lyn Seiser officiating. Music was provided by organist Mrs. Carol McInturf. Memorials are suggested to the Harlan County Hospital or to the Alma United Methodist Church Building Fund. Private inurnment of the cremated remains will be at the Alma Cemetery at a later date. Banta-Torrey Funeral Home of Alma was in charge of arrangements.
