Ferlen, who was operated on for hernia at the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames the middle of last week, passing away there on Friday following the operation. He rallied from the ordeal nicely and for a few hours it was thought that he would recover. A change came late Thursday night and the crisis came the next morning and he passed away about noon. The remains were brought to Stratford Friday afternoon and on Monday forenoon funeral services were held at the late home conducted by Rev. Edwin Sahlen of the South Marion M.E. Church, assisted by Rev. C.H. Flesher of the local M.E. Church. A mixed quartette from the local church sang several appropriate and suitable hymns. The remains were laid to rest in the South Marion Cemetery. Mons M. Ferlen was born in Farla parish, Helsingland, Sweden, October 8, 1842, and died on July 31, 1925, having attained the ripe old age of 82 years, 9 months, 23 days. He was united in marriage to Anna Sophia Beck, July 14, 1870, and to them was born 6 children, four sons and two daughters. The oldest son died in infancy. The family lived on a farm in the south part of Marion Township until 1908 when they moved to Stratford where they have since resided. Deceased is survived by five children. They are: Mrs. Lorena Poulson, Mrs. Lillian Olson and Elmer F. Ferlen, all of Stratford, Arthur J. Ferlen and Tillman H. Ferlen, both of Gibbon, Nebr.; seven grandchildren also survive. His wife died in February this year and a brother, Olof Ferlen, died in December, 1924. One brother, Swan Ferlen survives and lives in Salina. He was one of the early settlers of this section and as such was known and very highly respected by a large number of friends. He was a quiet and unassuming man, though always jolly and goodnatured. The death of his brother last winter and of his wife a very few months later, came as a terrible and crushing blow to him from which it was difficult for him to completely recover. His death marks the passing of another of our sturdy pioneers of whom so few remain. Those from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Beck and family, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Beck and family, Mr. and Mrs. Anderson, all of Des Moines; Herbert Beck of Corning, Calif.; David Beck of Webb, Iowa; Henry Beck of Vermillion, S.D.; A.J. and T.H. Ferlen of Gibbon, Nebr.; Mrs. Frank Erickson of Ames; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Olson, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Nyman, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bauer and Mrs. M. Robinson, all of Boone.
