SHAEFFER CALLED HOME Passed Into Final Sleep at Her Home Here Monday Eve. The people of Stratford and vicinity were made sad Monday morning when the news was spread that Mrs. T.H. Shaeffer had passed away. Although she had been suffering for some time with lung and throat trouble she had not been confined to her bed until the past two weeks, and when the fact was made known that she was no more it cast a gloom over the whole community. In the passing of Mrs. Shaeffer a true and earnest christian has been removed from our midst - a lady whose constant delight and pleasure was to do good for others. A true, loving wife and mother, her closest attention was given to her family. Her entire life was filled with good deeds and good words for everyone. Her soul overflowed with blessings from God, which she gladly bestowed upon others. Her face beamed with a holy radiance and her presence filled hearts with pleasure and happiness. A prayer from her lips was as if uttered by an angel and her everyday life was spent in communication with her God. She was always ready to cheer or help a sick person and the deep sympathy shown by her in many cases cheered and brightened the lives of many. She was a tireless worker for the Master and through her efforts many souls were saved. In her kind and loving way she brightened the pathway of many a sin-sick soul. The poor and needy were never forgotten by her and her greatest delight was in making people happy. A good woman has gone to her reward to sit on the right hand of God. Her presence will be greatly missed, but kind words said and good deeds done while here will never be forgotten. ******************************** Stratford Courier September 12, 1907 Obituary Mrs. T.H. Shaeffer (Anna Ferlen) was born in Farila, Sweden, September 29, 1845. At the age of about ten years, she with her parents and brothers came to America, arriving in New York in October, 1855. They went from there to Victoria, Illinois, where they lived for two years, afterward moving to Hamilton County in the year 1857. She was united in marriage to T.H. Shaeffer on March 17, 1864 and they located on a farm south of Stratford. To this union was born seven children, six sons and one daughter, one son and one daughter having preceded her to the heavenly home - William S., the oldest son who died July, 1887 and Alice M., the only daughter, who died in January, 1892. Deceased was a faithful and devout member of the M.E. church. Her entire soul was filled with the spirit of a true and earnest christian. She leaves to mourn her taking away a husband, five sons and three brothers. The funeral services were held at the residence and at the M.E. church Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E.S. Benjamin. The church was beautifully decorated and many floral tributes were given to the memory of the deceased. The choir consisted in part of singers chosen by the deceased before her death. The church was crowded to overflowing with friends to pay their last tribute to the departed christian friend and a large concourse of friends followed the remains to the Olson cemetery, where the deceased was laid to rest. A loving wife and mother, a true and earnest christian has gone to her reward to wear a crown filled with stars. ******************************** Webster City Tribune September 6, 1907 STRATFORD LADY CALLED BY DEATH Mrs. T.H. Shaeffer Dies of Tuberculosis After Suffering for Over Two Years Stratford, Sept. 4 - Special to the Freeman-Tribune: Mrs. T.H. Shaeffer, for many years a resident of this city, died at her home Monday, September 2. Her death was due to tuberculosis with which she had suffered for over two years. Mrs. Shaeffer, whose maiden name was Anna Ferlen, was born in Sweden 61 years ago. In an early day she and her husband came to Iowa and farmed for a number of years. Later Mr. Shaeffer was in business at Hook's Point and at Stratford. Some years ago he retired. Mr. and Mrs. Shaeffer were the parents of five boys, two of whom, Swan and John, are proprietors of a general store in Stratford. The other three boys, Fred, Frank and Sam, reside in Colorado. They will be here for the funeral. Mrs. Shaeffer was a woman of strong and noble character. She was a member of the Methodist Church of Stratford. The funeral will be held in that church Friday at 1:30 p.m., Rev. Benjamin officiating.
