Wisconsin ----------------------------- MORDECAI SMITH WAS A PIONEER One of the earliest settlers of Afton township passed away Thursday in the death of Mordecai Smith, who settled there in 1863 and devoted more than a half century of his life to helping to develop the county from the stage of wilderness into the present rich and prosperous state. Mr. Smith was born in Rockridge County, Virginia, Oct. 6, 1833. He moved to Illinois at an early age and on April 21, 1855, was united in marriage to Miss Phebe L. Osborn near Freeport, Ill. To this union were granted ten children, three of who preceded the father to the better land. Seven are still living, five sons and two daughters. In addition to these there are fifty-six grandchildren and a host of friends and other relatives. The wife and mother, who was his companion for so many years, departed this life July 1, 1908. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the Civil War, serving his country for two years and three months. Funeral services were held from the Christian church Saturday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock. Rev. E.E. Mack officiating assisted by Rev. Baier. The pallbearers were six grandsons in uniform, all of whom saw overseas service in the World War. Albert and Clarence served in the navy, and Rufus, John Henry and Ben in the Army.
