Felton, of Center Junction, Iowa, died, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Winifred Porter, in Maquoketa, with whom he had been spending the last few months of a long and useful life. He was born in Highland county, Ohio, March 14,1828, and removed with his parents to Indiana, when about 4 years old. He pursued his studies in a little log cabin school house and in the summer of 1850 he was a student in Marion Seminary, Indianapolis, Indiana. He obtained his first experience as a teacher in Highland and Brown counties, Ohio. In July, 1853, he came to Bloomfleld, Iowa, but locating, in August, in Jones county. He was one of the first teachers in Scotch Grove township and had as one of his first pupils there, Miss Anna M. Kraus, with whom he was united in marriage, August 29, 1854. Of their eight children, Margaret Frances Kegley and Harlan Phillip are deceased. The others are, George L., Arkinda, Arkansas; Alford Nichols, Armour; Oliver J., Cedar Rapids; Charles W., Sioux City; Winifred Porter, Maquoketa, and William Reed, Miles City, Montana. After spending 2 years on the home farm, after his father's death, Mr. and Mrs. Felton came to Jones county in a prairie schooner. He here spent about 40 years in successful farming and removed to Center Junction in 1898. His well trained mind retained much of its vigor to the last. He was one of the first members of both Madison Methodist Episcopal church, later having his membership at Center Junction. He belonged to Wyoming lodge, No. 206, A.F.&A.M. As one of the earliest settlers of this section of the state, the county historian says that "he deserves distinction" and "as a man of strong character and high principles, he is worthy of the highest tributes, which may be paid to any." January 31, 1914, the funeral services were held in the M. E. church, at Center Junction, his pastor, Rev. P. M. Phillips, preaching the sermon from Romans 13:11 to a houseful of his relatives and friends. To him, two days before his death, he had confidently and clearly expressed his faith in Christ's teachings and added, "I know in whom I have believed." He was buried in the North Madison cemetery of which he was a trustee, Wyoming lodge A.F. & A.M. using their impressive service. A large circle of friends will mourn his loss and cherish his memory.
