Description	:	Thomas Patrick Murphy was the son of Patrick Murphy and Nora Lanigan. He was born on a farm east of Walnut, Iowa, Feb 11, 1876. His brothers were Michael, Daniel, John, and William. He attended Walnut High School before going to St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa. He remained there five years, completing his collegiate course and studying philosophy. He was born on a farm east of Walnut, Iowa, Feb 11, 1876. His brothers were Michael, Daniel, John, and William. He attended Walnut High School before going to St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa. He remained there five years, completing his collegiate course and studying philosophy. He then entered Kenrick seminary, St. Louis Mo., and was ordained to the priesthood there by the Most Rev. John J. Glennon, D.D., on June 10, 1904. Father Murphy said his first mass at St Patrick Catholic Church in Walnut, Iowa on June 21, 1904. Monsignor Murphy's first assignment was at St. Ambrose College, where he was an instructor in classical languages. In 1906, he was appointed the first resident pastor of St. Mary's Church, Guthrie Center, and in 1909 under his direction a new brick church was built. Also, he was instrumental in the construction of the mission church in Panora, Iowa which was named St. Cecilia. In August, 1923, he went to Chariton as pastor of Sacred Heart parish, and in July of the following year he was appointed by Bishop T.W. Drumn to St. Peter's parish in East Des Moines. Monsignor Murphy had been a diocesan consulter since 1928. The Papal honor on Domestic Prelate was bestowed on him by Pope Pius XII on Nov. 3, 1944. He served at St Peter Catholic Church for 27 years. In 1950, he became ill with a serious heart condition and after being in the hospital over a year he died November 23, 1951 in Des Moines, Polk, Iowa. He was buried in the St Patrick Catholic Cemetery in Walnut, Iowa on November 26, 1951. Obituary: Msgr. T. P. Murphy Buried Monday Native of Walnut Funeral services were held at 10:30 Monday morning in St Peter’s Church in Des Moines for its pastor, Rt Rv. Msgr. Thomas P. Murphy, 75, a native of Walnut. Interment was in the Walnut Catholic Cemetery Monday afternoon. Msgr. Murphy died Friday afternoon at Mercy hospital following a long illness. He was pastor at St. Peter’s church for 27 years and before that at Chariton and Guthrie Center. Msgr. Murphy attended elementary and high school at Walnut and graduated from St. Ambrose College at Davenport in 1902. He studied theology at Kenrick Seminary, St Louis, MO, and was ordained in 1904. Prior to being appointed to St. Mary’s Church at Guthrie Center in 1906, he served two years as an instructor at St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Msgr. Murphy was pastor at Guthrie Center until 1923 and served several month as pastor of Sacred Heart church at Chariton before going to the Des Moines parish, Since 1928, he had been a diocesan consulter as a member of the bishop’s board and he was made a monsignor in 1943. Surviving are two brothers, M.E. Murphy of Walnut and Dan D. Murphy of Sioux City. He was preceded in death by one brother, William M. Murphy of Walnut.
