Description	:	Patrick Murphy was born in Ireland between and 1840 and 1845. When he came to the United Statas he lived first in the eastern part of the United States and worked for the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad in the state of Pennsylvania. He continue to work for the railroad as it was built across the United States and followed it as far as Council Bluffs, Iowa. Read More	Patrick Murphy was born in Ireland between and 1840 and 1845. When he came to the United Statas he lived first in the eastern part of the United States and worked for the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad in the state of Pennsylvania. He continue to work for the railroad as it was built across the United States and followed it as far as Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was a foreman of what was known as the "mud train” and he was in charge of 150-200 men. They loaded the dirt and mud with short handled shovels. Patrick is in the 1870 census in Brighton Township., Cass County, Iowa living with the Edmond Lanigan family and a group of Irish men who worked for the railroad. On November 13, 1870, he was married to Hanora Lanigan in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Edmond and Bridge Lanigan and was born in the Pittsburg, Pennsylvania area. In 1872, he purchased a farm in Clay Township, Shelby County, Iowa. This farm was northeast of Walnut, Iowa, and four of their 5 children were born there. The same year that he bought the farm, Patrick Murphy’s brother, Daniel Murphy came from Ireland and lived with them. The farm was handed down from Hanora to Michael Murphy, to Michael’s son Bernard who farmed the land until 1971. Their children were Michael Edward born November 13, 1872, Daniel David who was born February 18, 1875, Thomas Patrick was born February 11, 1876, John H. was born September, 1877 and William Martin was born March 12, 1879. Patrick died at a young age on January 4, 1879. All of his sons were buried in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery except Daniel who was buried in Sioux City in the Calvary Cemetery. Patrick Murphy’s obituary: Pat Murphy living north of Marne who has been ailing for some time, died last Saturday night. His funeral sermon was preached by the Rev. Father Gaul. The body was interred in the cemetery south of Walnut. (from the Walnut Bureau 1-9-1879) Note: St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery was later moved to land on the west side of Walnut, Iowa, and Patrick Murphy’s body exhumed and moved to that location. The date on his stone is July 27, 1878 but his obituary leads one to believe he died January 4, 1879.
