Murriel Valera Abel was born Jan. 1. 1875 on the old Abel farm located four miles northwest of Emerson in Indian Creek township, and passed away Saturday, Dec. 4. at the Laurel Manor nursing home in Red Oak after many years of lingering illness at the age of 79 years, 11 months, and four days. She was the eldest child of the eight children born to Rosetta and Don Carlos Abel, one of the early pioneer families to settle in Mills county and Emerson vicinity. Her parents moved to Emerson when she was two years of age and resided in the east part of town, known to us all as the Abel home. She attended the Emerson public schools and high school here. Murriel joined the Baptist church and for many years sang in the church choir until her health became impaired and she no longer could take part. For some years she was a seamstress in the Emerson community, spending days and weeks in homes sewing for the needs of the families. Later she was employed in a dressmaking shop in Emerson. On Feb. 22. 1905 she was united in marriage to David S. Kinney of Emerson at the home of her parents. They moved to a farm in Kansas that they had bought there, later moving to Donophan, Nebr. In 1913 they moved back to Emerson, to the home where she has lived until her death. Her father built this home for Dave and Murriel so that she could be near to them as Murriel's health was failing. Her father passed away in 1920 and it was at this time that she started to take care of her mother and caring for her younger sisters and brothers, assuming that same responsibility after her mother's death In 1938. In March 1950 her husband passed away. Three brothers preceded her in death. Murriel was a semi-invalid for many years, her eyesight failing her but she always had a cheerful outlook on these frailities of the human body and never complained. She was always ready with a cheerful word to all those who came to see her an she was unable to go out and see others and take part in the community affairs. She leave to mourn her passing one brother, W. W. Abel of Emerson, three sisters, Dana Oglevie and Lurland Abel of Emerson, and Elaine Merrill of Pleasantville, Nebraska and a host of relatives and friends.
