She was born in Boise, ID, on August 2, 1930, to Muriel and Albert Garrett. She spent her younger years in Salem and Silverton, OR, moving to Spokane, WA during World War II with her mother and stepfather, Jack Morton, graduating from Rogers High School in 1948. She attended Eastern Washington College, where she met Donald Rivers. They married on September 3, 1950, and moved to Waterville, where Don taught school for more than 30 years. The couple served as the town's photographers for 50 years, running Rivers Studio. They took tens of thousands of school photos, weddings, portraits, and area news photos - recording the history of Waterville. They were official photographers for the North Central Washington District Fair for many years, starting and chairing the photography exhibit booth there. In 2012, the fair created the "NCW District Fair Don & Nadra Rivers Best of Show Photography Award" in their honor. She was a photographer, writer, and editor for the Waterville Empire Press and a correspondent for The Wenatchee Daily World. She spent most of her life as a volunteer and leader in many community organizations, including Camp Fire Girls, Cub Scouts, the Waterville School, and the Waterville Rebekah Lodge, where she held many offices, including Noble Grand. She was active in the Waterville Federated Church, teaching Sunday school, playing the piano, and serving with the Church Guild and Diaconate. She and Don were presented the "Douglas County Take Pride in America Volunteers of the Year" in 1994. She loved people and believed in keeping and sharing a positive spirit. Nadra often ended visits and phone calls with "May your angels go with you." She is survived by five children: Dale Rivers of St. Regis, MT and McMurdo, Antarctica, Marcia Rivers Smith and Rob of Preston, WA, Kathi Rivers Shannon and Greg of Cashmere, WA, Scott Rivers and Judy of Creston, WA and Lisa Rivers Aikens and Peter of Edmonds, WA; five grandchildren, Kristi Rivers and Kyle of Vancouver, WA, Trevor Rivers and Jessica of Brunswick, ME and Vicki Rivers of Moses Lake, WA, and Preston and Maia Aikens of Edmonds; and a sister, Naomi Morton of McAllen, TX. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don, in 2003; and a daughter, Barbara, in 1958. Services will be held at 1100 a.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2013, at the Waterville Federated Church.
