Mrs. Nancy Cole, wife of J. W. Cole, was born March 15th, 1832, in Switzerland county, Indiana. She was married to her now bereaved husband in the fall of 1848 and spent 39 years by his side. Ten children came to cheer and bless the parents, two of these boys died young and 8 are still living, 3 sons and 5 daughters. Mrs. Cole came to the neighborhood of Chanute, where she lived and died 19 years ago. Her end was unexpected. The Sabbath before her death she worshipped with her husband in the M.E. Church in this city and on Monday afternoon attended a funeral. On Tuesday, she was taken sick and on Saturday evening at 6 pm, she passed away. Consciousness remained full and clear until 4 am Saturday morning. Her character was embedded in religious convictions and experience. At the age of 16, she experienced that great change we call the new birth, united with the Methodist Episcopal church and remained a faithful member to the end. Two weeks after coming here her letter was handed into a church first organized in her neighborhood. She was very faithful in attendance upon the means of grace, and exemplified her religion in every day life in the home circle. Her last hours of consciousness were spent in song and triumphant praise and earnest exhortations to all to meet her in Heaven. Thus, lived and died a loving mother, a faithful wife and a devoted Christian. Her funeral service was held on Sabbath afternoon at 3:30 in the presence of the congregation that filled the church to overflowing. The sermon was preached from 1 Corinthians.18, 45.
