When a small child she moved with her parents to a farm on Honey Creek, where she spent her girlhood years. She was united in marriage to Thomas Bestwick, September 22, 1868, at Albany, Kansas. They lived on a farm on Rock Creek for a number of years. when they moved into Sabetha, making their home here for nearly fifty years. To this union ten children were born, one daughter dying in infancy. The surviving children are: Alice Bestwick of St. Joseph; Delbert and Wesley of Sabetha; Mrs. Edna Munn of Great Bend, Kansas; Albert of near Oneida; Arthur of Hiawatha; Mrs. Mae Teague of Sabetha; Roy of Falls City and Frank of Sabetha. Mrs. Bestwick has been a member of the Methodist church practically all her life, becoming a member in her girlhood, has been faithful and true to its teachings. Her first interest has always been her home, the care and comfort of the lives trusted to her keeping. She has been a loving mother, generous and understanding in all the relations in her life. Her daughter-in-law said of her "She has been a true mother to me ever since I came into the family." She has become affectionately known to many as "Aunt Nan," a kindly person, whose years have been full and who has gone to her full reward. Her husband, a veteran of the civil war, died March 18, 1923, at the age of 85 years. She lived alone for awhile after which she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Mae Teague, only spending summers in her own cottage when her health would permit. In her failing health of the last few years she has been constantly with her daughter. has had her tender care through illness and death. Her pleasure has been found in the visits of her children and their families. She had gone to St. Joseph with Mrs. Teague for a long anticipated visit with her daughter, Alice, and while there caught cold, which after she returned home developed into pneumonia. Her children were called to her bedside. Everything possible was done for her by loving hands, but her frail strength was not sufficient to carry through the illness and at 10:00 o'clock Friday morning life passed. Relatives who survive her, are her nine children, 25 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; two brothers, Joshua Haxton, Redlands California, and Sam Haxton living in Colorado; one sister, Mrs. Emma Longberg, Goff, Kansas. Three brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. Those who attended from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Bestwick from Great Bend, Kansas; Mrs. Edna Munn and two daughters Alice and Maxine of Great Bend, Kans.; Roy Bestwick and family from Falls City, Nebr.; Art Bestwick and family of Hiawatha, Kasnas; Alice Bestwick of St. Joe; Mrs. Willis, Mr. Bransfield of Leavenworth, Kansas; Mrs. Kapp, Mrs. How, Mrs. McMichael, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Waite, St. Joe; and Mrs. Ned Fenner of Marysville. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J.O. Borton. A quartet, A.O. Ladd, Lester Payne, Mrs. Belle Haxton and Mrs. Will Durstine sang several beautiful hymns. The pallbearers were six sons, Arthur, Ab, Delbert, Frank, Roy and Wesley. Interment was made in the Sabetha cemetery.
