Mr. Bestwick had been in failing health for a year or two, although he was up and about, but two weeks ago he fell, when alone in his room, and members of the family who heard him fall, and hastened to him, found him unconscious. After that he was bedfast, although he regained consciousness and his mind remained clear until the last. Born in Mercer county, Pennsylvania, January 17, 1838, Thomas Bestwick came to Kansas in 1858 and settled in the Rock Creek neighborhood. On September 22, 1868, he married Miss Nancy Haxton at her home in Albany, and they lived happily together. His wife, who survives him, was the faithful, devoted nurse. They moved to Sabetha in March, 1882 and have lived here ever since. Mr. Bestwick had a splendid Civil war record. He enlisted January 22, 1862, in Company D 8th Kansas regiment, and re-enlisted, as Sergeant January 23, 1863 at Strawberry Plain, East Tennessee. He was wounded in action at the Battle of Chickamauga, September 19, 1863. Remianed in the service and was made Provision sergeant September 1, 1865. He was engaged in the following battles: Mission Ridge, Chickamauga, Franklin, Tennessee; Nashville, Tennessee, and the siege of Atlanta. Besides those big engagements, Mr. Bestwick was in a number of small skirmishes. He went with his company to San Antonio late in the year of 1865, and was mustered out there November 28, 1865, being honorably discharged January 19, 1866, at Fort Leavenworth. Having served for three years, eleven months and nineteen days. Thomas Bestwick was the last of 4 brothers to die. His brothers, Charles, Jim and Laz having preceded him into the other world. One sister, Mrs. Gusta Newman, of beloved memory died a few years ago, and another sister, Mrs. Joshua Haxton,of Redlands, Calif., survives him. Three daughters and six sons survive: Miss Alice Bestwick, of St. Joseph, Mo.; Mrs. C.E. Munn, Great Bend, Kas.; Mrs. C.L. Teague, Home City, Kas.; Delbert, Wesley, Albert, Arthur, Rodney and Frank Bestwick, all of Sabetha. During his last days on earth Mr. Bestwick had his wife and children with him nearly moment. They all loved him tenderly and have many many recollections of his affectionate kindness. He was a devoted husband and kind father. Twenty four grandchildren survive. Thomas Bestwick lived a successful life. He was respected and loved in the community where he lived nearly all his life. During his lifetime, and now that he is gone, people will say of him: "Tom Bestwick was one of the nicest men who ever lived. He was cheerful, kind upright; there is not one blot on his memory." He leaves a spledid family, all of whom have the fine attributes possessed by him and his good wife. The funeral took place at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the Methodist Church and was very impressive. The Rev. C.V. Shulenberger officiated. The six stalwart sons of Mr. and Mrs. Bestwick were the pall bearers, and the members of the local chapter of the G.A.R. attended in a body. At the grave the Legion department had its firing squad and buglers.
