Last Mexican War Pensioner of Ninth District Shortly after 2 o'clock Saturday morning the hand of death touched the brow of one of Tipton county's beloved pioneer women, Mrs. nancy Green, age 81, widow of the late Milton S. Green, was called to her reward. Five weeks ago today, Mrs. Green fell at her home on Daniels street and her hip was broken, but this injury while it may have hastened the end was no the direct cause of her death which is attributed to complication arising from a cancerous condition of the stomach and intestines. With the passing of this remarkable woman, who had been a resident of Tipton county since 1863, the Ninth congressional district loses its last pensioner of the Mexican war. For several year she had been drawing a widow's pension, her husband, Milton S. Green, having been a soldier in that conflict. For several years Mrs. Green had the misfortune to be totally blind and it was this affliction which caused her to receive her broken limb five weeks ago. She had attempted to sit down on a couch and misjudged the distance, slipped and struck the floor. Mrs. Green, whose maiden name was Nancy Crum, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Matthias Crum of Scott County, and was one of the eight children of whom only one is now living. She was born in Scott country, Indiana, June 24, 1840, [year should be 1842] and all her early life was spent in that country. School privileges were meager and most schooling she received was in a log school house under rather primitive conditions. A sister of Mrs. Green had married Arch Woods, of the county, and they had move there. Mrs. Green came her to visit them in December 1863, and later [?] and was woo'ed by Milton S. Green and they were married September 11, 1864 at the home of his father, Judge John Green, Judge Green performing the marriage ceremony. They went to housekeeping the next day on the farm, a mile north of the city, formerly owned by her sons, Oll [Oliver] and Thomas Green, in a log cabin on the place. Mrs. Green had endured all the pioneer hardships that go with life in a new country, amid conditions that hardly seem possible for us to imagine at the present time. there was no ditching and water stood everywhere. Mr. and Mrs. Green remained on the farm until his death, August 19, 1899, and she did not move to Tipton until a few years later. She later sold her interest in the farm to her sones, having built a neat home on Daniels street. When Mr. and Mrs. Green were married he had three children by a former wife, and she reared these children. One of these, Mrs. Mary Green Smith, resides in Clinton, Mo., and she is the only one now living. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Green, on dying in infancy, a son, Edward, dying at the age of 13, and a daughter, Mrs. Nellie Green Tichenor, the wife of Marion Tichenor, dying in September, 1900. The two sons, Oll and Thomas, reside in Tipton. She had eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She has on sister, Mrs. Frances Craig, of Scott country, who is eight year of age and in failing health and unable to attend the funeral. mrs. Green united with the church in early life and was a member of the Baptist church of this city. Funeral arrangement have not been completed, but will like be held Monday afternoon, according to announcement of the son, TThomas J. Green.
