Description	:	World War II “Government Girl” Lucille Smith Dunkley Husztek died January 31, 2016 at her home in Annandale, Virginia. She was recruited by and came to work for the Federal Government in March, 1942 during World War II, along with her older sister and brother-in-law. She worked for the Army Signal Intelligence Service at Arlington Hall Station, mapping intercepted Japanese transmissions, and stayed with that service until her marriage to Captain Charlie Jack Dunkley, USMC, in September 1948. Read More	World War II “Government Girl” Lucille Smith Dunkley Husztek died January 31, 2016 at her home in Annandale, Virginia. She was recruited by and came to work for the Federal Government in March, 1942 during World War II, along with her older sister and brother-in-law. She worked for the Army Signal Intelligence Service at Arlington Hall Station, mapping intercepted Japanese transmissions, and stayed with that service until her marriage to Captain Charlie Jack Dunkley, USMC, in September 1948. Major and Mrs. Dunkley returned to Northern Virginia in August, 1955, settling in what is now Annandale. Major Dunkley died in July, 1961, and Lucille married Lt. Col W.S. Husztek, USAF, in October, 1962. Upon his retirement, the Huszteks divided their time between their home in Annandale, their farm in Stokes County, and traveling the world. They toured Europe, South America, the Soviet Union, Australia and New Zealand. Mrs. Husztek was happiest when working in her garden in North Carolina, and when exploring the woods and trails around her, usually with her sisters. Lucille was born December 30, 1921 in Brown Mountain, Stokes County, North Carolina to Thomas Martin and Daisy Dearmin Smith. She attended Nancy Reynolds Memorial High School where she was a basketball captain, beauty queen and valedictorian upon her graduation in 1939. She attended cosmetology school in Winston-Salem and worked as a beautician until her government work began. From 1958 through 1964, she managed the cafeteria at Woodburn Elementary School in Falls Church. She is survived by her daughter, Diane Lucille Dunkley of Annandale, VA; son, Michael Jack Dunkley and wife Suzanne of Alexandria, VA; her sister, Jeanette Smith Graves of Westfield, NC and by dozens of nieces, nephews, great and great-great-nieces and nephews and by two step-sons. She was preceded in death by her husbands, her parents, by her sisters: Edith Smith Beasley Christian, Alice Smith Tucker, Elsie Smith Goodman, and Betty Rosalie Smith, and by her brothers: Jack Thomas Smith, James Weldon Smith and Frank Laine Smith. A funeral service will be held at Brown Mountain Baptist Church on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at 2:00 PM with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Family members will be greeting visitors at the church on Saturday from 1:00 PM until time of service. Flowers are always welcome, or if one chooses, charitable contributions may be made in Lucille’s memory to Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s or Heart Disease research or Stokes County Animal Rescue.
