We have seen samples of wool from a lamb eight months old belonging to him, which is fully eight inches lon[g.] *************************** The Emporia Weekly News, 23 Jan 1880, Fri SAD ACCIDENT We regret to learn that Nathan Hawk, of Carbondale, Osage county, and for some years a resident of this city, met with a fatal accident on Friday last. He was engaged in repairing a pistol, when it was accidentally discharged, the ball passing through his head and causing instant death. The remains will arrive here by the Santa Fe train this evening, and will be placed in our cemetery by the side of those of his wife, who died during the residence of the family here. His family, who will be remembered by many of our people, will have the heartfelt sympathies of all their friend here in their sad bereavement. ***************************** The Russell [KS] Record, 29 Jan 1880, Thursday While on the way to the cemetery with the remains of the unfortunate Nathan Hawke on Monday evening, the horse of Rev. C. R. Rice, who led the procession, became unmanageable and ran away with him, creating a very untimely sensation. Mr. Rice valiantly held to the lines, but the wild animal tore across the prairies and back towards town at a furious rate. Mr. Rice pulled him into the fence around Frank McCain's residence, but he went right through it. The buggy struck a fence-post on the opposite side of the lot, and Mr. Rice and his buggy were "left." He jumped into another buggy, however, and reached the cemetery in time to discharge his ministerial duty at the grave.--Emporia Journal
