INFORMATION FROM:Lynda Gibbs, Find A Grave member In the Danville Confederate hospital website one will see that Nathanial Davis, my second grandfather, is actually buried in the confederate cemetery at Danville, Virginia. He is buried there under the name of D.F. Davis and hospital records are correct for his company and regiment. I do remember my aunt telling me stories of my second great grandfather and how he did of illness trying to get back home from the trenches in Petersburg, late in the war. Somewhere I was told he died of dysentery, but I haven't been able to confirm that. I do know that when a soldier was dying, they would be released to go home, however he could get there. My aunt told me that he attempted to walk but died on the way. Danville would have been on that route. INFORMATION SOURCE: Bill Wilson, Find A Grave member This has really gotten confusing. Seems we have 2 or possibly 3 N.F. Davis. This is just data I have sources for: !) Co G 64th NC INF RGT CSA,, Was captured 7 Sep 1863 and died the 9th Dec 1863 in Danville Civil War Hosp. Cemetery. He was buried in the Confederate part of the Cemetery in an unmarked grave. 2) Was admitted to Wayside Hospital (Petersvurg Virginia) Hospital on 25 Jun 1864 where he died 17 Aug 1864 Served in Co B 34th NC INF REGT CSA .. This appears to be the one who joined Union Forces, was married to a M. A Davis who collected a pension for his service. and 3) My Nathaniel Fernilson Davis who was born 25 Aug 1922. marrieds Annie E McKinney in 1849 and she died in 1853. Married Minerva Daves in 1854 and then he died 5 Aug 1865. I have many of their children's records. Did he serve? I'm not sure but several of his brother's and bro-in-laws did. Some researchers believe my Nathaniel was the second one listed above but I do not agree. Mine might have served in the 34th along with a brother but he I can not find a service record him or for the dates listed on the headstone. This is just an update FYI - use it as you choose.
