Stratford Courier Oct. 13, 1921 Mrs. John Engstrom passed away at the Oakdale Sanitarium, Wednesday evening of last week, after a long and lingering illness. As announced in these columns last week, she had failed rapidly the last month and her death had been almost momentarily expected for some weeks, but even so came as a great blow to the husband and children and other relatives here. Nellie Christina Engstrom (born Berglund), was born on a farm in Webster Township, north of Stratford, January 26, 1885. She was united in marriage to John Engstrom of El Campo, Texas, Sept. 12, 1906 and the couple made their home there until 1909 when they moved to a farm near Stratford which had since been their home. Three children were born to them, all of whom survive. They are: Melvin, Oscar and Ethel. During the Enslow meetings here in 1911 she was converted and was baptized into the fellowship of the local Baptist Church together with her husband in June of the same year. She remained a faithful and highly esteemed member of the church until death claimed her October 5, 1921 at the age of 37 years, 8 months and 8 days. Mrs. Engstrom has been a constant sufferer for several years with pulmunary tuberculosis and for over a year was at the sanitarium at Oakdale for treatment for her trouble. She was taken to that institution Sept. 27, 1920 making one year and 8 days during which time she had been confined to her bed at the hospital. For a time she seemed to improve and gain strength but during the last months had gradually grown weaker. Through all her sufferings she was patient and optimistic and never let go of the anchor of hope. A loving wife and mother and by nature true and affectionate, she was especially attached to her home and family. She leaves to mourn her early passing, her husband and three small children, her aged mother, Mrs. Anna Berglund, seven sisters: Mrs. Nels (Clara) Erickson, Mrs. Peter (Anna) Anderson, Mrs. Gust (Mellie) Erickson, Mrs. David (Bessie) Anderson, Mrs. Fred (Selma) Carlberg, Mrs. Clem (Edith) Iles, and Mrs. Hans (Esther) Knuth; one brother, Olof Berglund, all of Stratford. Other relatives and a host of friends also mourn her passing. The remains arrived here Friday morning and funeral services were held from the home Sunday at 1:30 and from the local Baptist Church at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. C.G. Bengston. The remains were interred in Oakwood Cemetery.
