Description	:	Nellie M. Curtiss was born in Evanston, Ill., November 22, 1865. As a little girl she came with her parents to Fillmore County, Nebraska, and received her elementary education in the Fairmont public schools. Also she attended the University of Nebraska, and then taught in the Fillmore County schools. For several years she was a member of the Fairmont school faculty. Read More	Nellie M. Curtiss was born in Evanston, Ill., November 22, 1865. As a little girl she came with her parents to Fillmore County, Nebraska, and received her elementary education in the Fairmont public schools. Also she attended the University of Nebraska, and then taught in the Fillmore County schools. For several years she was a member of the Fairmont school faculty. She was also a member of the faculty of the girls training school at Geneva for a number of years. Feeling a call to deaconess work, she entered training and was graduated from the Lucy Rider Meyer School in Chicago. In her deaconess field she served in downtown churches in Chicago, in the Englewood Church of Chicago, in churches in Boston and later became superintendent of the Deaconess Home in Portland. She retired ten years ago. Because of the condition of her health the past several years, she made her home at Thoburn Terrace in Alhambra, Cal., a home for retired deaconesses and missionaries. A few days before her death Miss Curtiss suffered an accident and was taken to the Methodist Hospital in Los Angeles, where she passed away August 7, 1943. She leaves to mourn her departure one sister, Mrs. Emma Dye of Julesburg, Col., also thirteen nieces and nephews and a host of friends whom she has helped over many rough places in life. Funeral services were held in California and in Fairmont Sunday afternoon., August 16, at Kritner's funeral home. Rev. R. W. Sandsted officiated. Music was furnished by Mrs. W. R. Dorrance and Mrs. R. W. Sandsted, with Mrs. A. A. Ashby at the piano. The pallbearers were three old friends, A. Noragon, A. R. Perkins and Frank Cubbison; two nephews, John Curtiss and Paul Curtiss, and a niece's husband, Albert Ficher of Shickley. Interment was in the Fairmont Cemetery.
