Peter Nordsletten of Wallingford, officiated, assisted by Re. T. Hanson and Mrs. Oscar Knutson of Lakefield, Minn., Rev. L.A. Mathre of Estherville, Rev. E.T. Lundy of Armstrong and Mr. C.J. Carlson of Dolliver. Musical numbers at the home and at the church were sung by a male quartette comprised of Messrs. Lawrence Sunde, Elmer Valen, Elvin Sunde and Oscar Sunde. Two solos were rendered by Mr. Lawrence Sunde. Miss Sadie Olson accompanied the singers. A very large attendance was present at the funeral and may floral offerings were given. A gift of $22.85 was given by Mr. Heggen's neighbors and friends in his memory, to the Ebenezer Home for the aged, Mineapolis. Mr. Heggen's six sons and sons-in-law acted as pall bearers. Interment was made in the Palestine cemetery. Obituary Nels S. Heggen was born in Norway on Sept. 24th, 1848 and he passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 11th, 1929, having attained the age of 81 years, 2 months and 17 days old. He died at the home of his son, Carl Heggen and family in Ellsworth township, where he had lived for 44 consecutive years. Mr. Heggen came to America with his parents as a little boy only 4 years old. The family came to Illinois, where they remained only a brief time. In 1855, 74 years ago, in a prairie schooner, the family moved westward to Story county, Iowa. It was down in the vicinity of Huxley in Story county, where Nels Heggen spent the most part of his boyhood days and where he likewise lived the years of his youth and where, too, he married in 1882, Miss Anna Carlson. This union was blessed with 9 children; 3 of these have preceded their father in death. Mrs. Heggen passed on to her Eternal reward 12 years ago. In the spring of 1885, as one of the early settlers, Nels Heggen came to Ellsworth township in Emmet county and he resided in that township ever since. He leaves to mourn his departure his six surviving children, namely Mrs. D.C. Pasley of Ceylon, Minn., Carl Heggen of Dolliver, Iowa, Mrs. A.N. Vorland of Armstrong, Mrs. O.J. Mathre of Estherville, Lewis Heggen of Dolliver, and Mrs. Andros Hansen of Dolliver. He is missed by his 20 grandchildren, who affectionately call him "Grandpa." He had at his departure also 4 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Lewis, Heggen, of Albernaty, Texas and by another brother, Mike Heggen of Devils Lake, N. Dak. Owing to far distance and infirmity his brothers were not able to be present at the funeral. In 1892 Mr. Heggen with his family joined the Palestine congregation. Mr. Heggen was a faithful member of his church. As a confessing Christian, he was highly respected. He was a happy Christian and his upright life radiated happiness wherever he was found to be.
